Download: FRG83G Motorola Droid 1 Update

The Droid community heard news of this update all the way back in January. "A limited number of owners will receive the update as part of a pre-launch 'soak' test before it’s more widely released. This has become standard practice, so we can observe for a few days to make sure there are no hidden problems before wide release", Matt stated, manager of the Motorola Owners Forum. As you may have seen, MyDroidWorld leaked this "test" update before it was officially released OTA (over the air) giving us a glimpse of what it may bring. For those who flashed the leaked "test" update or were included in the pre-launch OTA, you will still be notified to receive the official "release" FRG83G now that all bugs have been worked out. The official "release" OTA started on March 9th and will update your Droid to Android 2.2.2. As noted by Verizon Wireless Droid support .pdf, this update will fix some mms/sms issues users were reporting.

So why care about this update when you have GPA ROMs to enjoy?  Unfortunately not every file on the Droid can be built from source. Because of this, "proprietary" files are used. These files are pulled directly from your device so it is very important to have the latest ones available, in this case FRG83G. Although the release notes for this update state that only mms/sms issues were addressed, the official OTA .zip shows much more being patched. Rather than contemplating for hours about what has or has not been changed from one release to another, I would much rather just be certain and include the latest proprietaries in my ROMs. That being said, expect them in GPA14.

"Pete you're slacking, you should have had these FRG83G ROMs in your downloads section the night of March 9th." I know, I know...For some reason this update has been very hard to get. I sure do miss the days when people were eager to post the Droid 1 OTA files or download urls taken from logcats. I put my development Droid back to stock using RSDLite and an sbf file but I still could not get it to receive the update. Usually, and even stated in official documents, you can "force" the update by going to Settings > About phone > System updates, but this did not work. Fortunately, Twitter followers Jonassink and DizkoDan wanted to help. After spending some time on Gtalk with each, I was able to guide them through the process required to get the system and OTA files dumped. I then took these files and created stock rooted ROMs out of them, one odexed and the other deodexed.

Before posting the download links for this update, I'd like to end on a lighter note. Check out the graphic of the Droid 1 in the update support .pdf. What a major FAIL! For starters the Droid 1 has never ran Donut (Android 1.6) as shown on the screen. Also note the "Advanced Task Killer" application in the top left. Pretty funny stuff. I can count the hours of Photoshop experience I have on one hand and I know I could have made a better graphic!

Edit: For those wanting to stop OTA notifications you will need to edit your build.prop file with the following...

ro.build.description=voles-user 2.2.2 FRG83G 91102 release-keys
ro.build.fingerprint=verizon/voles/sholes/sholes:2.2.2/FRG83G/91102:user/release-keys

  1. Thanks for the files!

    And, about the "Photoshop" job, I think it's legit. I'm sure the Droid was running 1.6 internally when it first came out Motorola's engineering oven, and that's probably what the marketing first got. They went down and had a few photos taken, and now when they need a Droid image for something, they just that old Droid.jpg offf the hard drive and never give it a second look...

    I had gone to http://www.gizmoninja.com/2011/02/01/frg83g-for-droid-1-get-it-while-you-can/ and downloaded this update from there, but it's not rooted like it claims. Thanks for hooking us up with a legitimate update, Pete! You're the man!

    Thanks for your diligence and commitment, Peter. I'm a happy GPA13 user - its quite an accomplishment on your part. I'm not sure if you intend us to downgrade to FRG83D now in order to have the proprietary files or wait for GPA14. If we stick with GPA13 pending your release of GPA14 do you think we'll see OTA update notification (which are of course very annoying). Again, many thanks.

  8. Thanks for all the work for these.

    Applying the Deodexed FRG83D on top of GPA13 put my Droid 1 into an endless boot (red eye screen). Does this require wiping cache/data?

  9. @chemebanshee, nooooo don't do that! LOL reinstall GPA13, wipe data and boot back up. No need to install this if on my GPA builds.

  10. I would think that since FRG83D is an update for Froyo, you wouldn't want (or need) to install it if you're running Gingerbread. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

    Also, I see that the kernel that is included with this update can be overclocked to 800 MHz. I was wondering if it is a standard voltage kernel, as I'm considering flashing back to a low voltage 1 GHz one.

  11. Day before yesterday I had installed FRG83GDEODEXED.zip. It all went well but I had the old market. I just installed this newer version and I still have the old market. How do I get the new market app? PS: Thanks for all your hard work.

  12. @Anonymous, the new market does not work on stock Froyo

  13. When do you expect the GPA14 release and ultimately BB? Thanks for all the work!

  14. I run BB v0.6...how does this affect me? I keep getting prompted to complete the update...will there be a patch for this update like there has been for others?

  15. I have an extra Droid 1 here that's not activated but can still receive OTA updates so any information on how to dump the files would be great.

  16. Thank you Pete this has been the smoothest ROM I have run ever. With a measely 600mhz you managed that with Gingerbread!

    I am now
    trying to tether my unrooted Xoom to my OG Droid with your Gingerbread ROM. After several failed attempts and lots of help we came to the conclusion it can't be done on this ROM. I don't understand why but is there a way to get it working. I was using Wireless Tether for root user and followed the instructions o on droid-life.

  17. If I have a stock FRG83D with root, will I lose root after applying the update? Is there a way to modify the update or apply it a different way so it doesn't molest my precious su binary?

  18. Hey Peter, or anyone... dumb question, What is meant by deodex and odex? From my understanding we d/l the GPA13Deodexed.zip file??? I have rooted my phone a while ago (no custom rom) and am anxious to install one of your kernels also! the few chevy's I've used are good at first then cause MMS to not be sent or received. I hate MMS issues. Thanks so much!

  19. deodexed and odexed is just the way the applications are packaged on your phone. If youre running custom themes deodexed is the way to go since its easier for devs to modify those apps. odexed has some part of their code are "separated" to boot faster. Deodexed = longer boot time, but easier to modify apps odexed = faster boot time, but harder to modify apps. Theres a debate whats better (after boot) but its really just preference, in terms on what you do with your droid or what not. Pete thanks for the hard work for us leechers!

  22. I am new to this. I just rooted my phone. Can someone please post a link to directions on how to install FRG83G Deodexed,FRG83G Odexed and
    FRG83G OTA files? I have a Motorola Droid 1, stock, only rooted. Thank you in advance for your help.

  23. Interesting that OG Droid now has 2.2.2 and Droid 2 is showing 2.2

  24. Ok, maybe I am dense...but here's my dilema. I currently have FRG83D w/ BB v 0.6.2.1 ....do I wipe and install? Should I change anything at all? Help me out here guys

  25. Why not just incorporate GB into Bugless? Stock GB (even rooted w/custom kernal) sucks compared to bb overcloclocked. Anxiously awaiting bb.

  26. Pete, excellent work. Can you list this rom in ROM Manager?

    @Anonymous - http://androidnexus.com/rooting-and-custom-roms/how-to-root-your-motorola-droid-running-stock-android

    This is the method I use to flash new ROMs via SPRecovery. Scroll to the section titled "Install the stock Android 2.1 rooted ROM" if this applies to you. I'd imagine that other methods are relatively similar.

    @steve - If you're running BB, installing this update will revert you back to the stock ROM with this FRG83G build number. I wouldn't do anything until Pete has released a newer version of BB based on this build.

  28. Any chance someone could post an update.zip with the update build.prop file? I tried to modify Pete's previous StopOTA.zip with the new build info but when I try to update via recovery in Rom Manager it says it couldn't read the file. Perhaps I'm editing it with the wrong tools...notepad and then just dumping it back to the zip.
