Over the past week, the Android team at Google pushed Gingerbread version 2.3.3 to AOSP (Android Open Source Project). Unfortunately I couldn't immediately work on it because of being busy with school but now I am on spring break and have found some time. Although the end user may not notice a difference between the two versions, I assure you much coding has changed. So much in fact that Live Wallpapers no longer worked and delayed this release until I could pinpoint the culprit.
Now that I have learned to compile kernels, I have made a 600MHz, stock voltage kernel that eliminates all the lag users have experienced running Gingerbread on the Droid. Before, audio would stutter, wake time would be delayed, and nothing felt "fluid" unless clocked to atleast 1GHz. With this new kernel, none of those issues occur. How I have achieved this with a 600MHz kernel came to me while I was half asleep (not sure if this is good or bad, but ideas and thoughts related to Android run through my head until I finally fall asleep every night). Being that this kernel is stock voltage, I highly recommend flashing my low voltage 600MHz kernel (if your device can handle the voltage decrease) to save battery life. Let's hope a Motorola employee flashes this ROM, sees how well it runs without being over-clocked, and decides to push an official Gingerbread update!
Aside from updating the entire ROM to Android 2.3.3, I have also updated the Market application to 2.3.4 and added the native Quick Office application that comes on Droid devices. For details about changes between each release, please read my changelog. Although the changelog may seem "simple" please realize that hours and hours of work are put into each release.
Once again I will mention, no Market applications are included in this ROM. Once you install this ROM you will need to download the following: YouTube, Gmail, Street View, Voice Search, Maps, Flash Player, Talkback, Kickback, and Soundback. Once Gmail is installed, allow it to auto sync by changing the following setting: Menu > Settings > Accounts & sync > example@gmail.com > Sync Gmail
If you experience any problems at all wipe data and cache!

Thanks Pete.
ReplyDeleteIf updating from GPA12 does this require a wipe?
ReplyDeleteNo wipe if coming from any of my GPA builds
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
ReplyDeleteQuestion: How do you tell if if your device can handle low voltage? Just install it and see if it works? Thanks!
Wow... one of the first 130 to dl it! Thanks as always!
ReplyDeleteI think may are downloading this 46 minutes to go
ReplyDeleteThanks for the update!
ReplyDeleteYou're the man Pete. Whats the word on the latest BB ? Going to base it on Gingerbread build?
ReplyDeleteThanks Peter!
ReplyDeleteAny plans to have your Gingerbread Roms or Kernels put into the Rom Manager listings, like your Bugless roms are?
Is that 600MHz kernel included or a separate download? Also, for someone who's new to this, what's the difference between this and Bugless Beast?
ReplyDeletePeter, do you recommend this kernal for someone who is currently running bugless beast? If so, what is the best practice in installing? If not, why? Thanks!!
ReplyDeleteIs there a download link to your 600Mhz kernel? I'm very interested in trying it out!
ReplyDeleteI've been on another rom for a bit but I'm interested in giving this a go after reading all your stuff. Thanks for keeping the Moto Droid on the forefront!
ReplyDeleteGreat release Pete as always. Lets really hope a Motorola Guy installs this. People at my local Verizon store love it.
ReplyDeleteIs there no ad-blocker in this one?
ReplyDeleteDoes this fix exist in other kernels, or is it something new you've found? GPA12 runs great for me, but I'm using a 1.1ghz slayher kernel.
ReplyDeleteWhere can we get an updated low voltage version of your kernel?
Thanks for all the hard work!
So all who are asking:
ReplyDelete600mhz kernel low voltage is a couple posts back on this blog
The best way to get it is to use the update.zip you all know how to use
The bugless beast version pete will work on will be based off of everything he is doing now, don't worry.
If your droid (only droid #1 people, stop asking) cannot handle petes lv kernel, be sure to have another zip ready to flash, boot loops are not fun!
Try not to think of GPA13 as just another rom but the step motorola would have taken if the Pete (the most awesome) had been in charge.
Caveat: super amounts of awesome.
Thanks for your fine work. You're producing exactly the sort of custom software I want to put on my Droid: stock and vanilla.
ReplyDeleteI would appreciate it, though, if you could provide more transparency with respect to how your builds differ from what I could download and build myself from the AOSP. For example, what did you do to eliminate lag at 600hz? And what configuration parameters did you use to build your kernels?
The low voltage kernels are linked-to here: http://www.peteralfonso.com/2011/02/download-droid-lowvoltage-kernels-v01.html
ReplyDeleteTo the guy asking what Pete does/did to eliminate lag and optimize his Roms, Theres a reason he's Pete and you're not. He doesnt need to let his talent get kanged to every other rom. If I were him, I wouldn't tell a soul my tricks unless money was involved. my .02
ReplyDeleteGreat job so far. First reboot after flash was boot looping, so a quick battery pull was needed. Then one slow boot later (dalvik rebuild?) this thing is running like a champ @600MHz. Unbelievable. If the LV600 kernel is this good, you have one hell of an accomplishment on your hands, and a future at Motorola I think.
ReplyDeleteImpressed as always. Thanks!
ReplyDeletei check your site everyday and to see new download today was two words...friggin awesome! downloading now brah. thanks again for all the hard work. Keep dreaming about the little green guy night cuz its inspiring greatness :)
ReplyDeleteFor those asking about ad blocking, go over to XDA Developers, search the forums for a hosts file and overwrite /etc/hosts with that (using Root Explorer or the like). Reboot and enjoy.
ReplyDeleteWhich one should I install android 2.3.3 or 2.3.2? Any significant reason? New to this. Once I'm done I will definitely donate, If, I'm satisfy.
ReplyDeleteGreat so far. Missing battery % otherwise smooth as butter even with only 25mb or ram left.
ReplyDeleteThanks pete!!!
Wish LTE phones would come out already!
If Im running a stock droid og what do I need to do to install this?
ReplyDeleteUpdate from the last build. Had the same issue as Rob; boot loop until I pulled the battery. That fixed it, but I still pushed one of his other LV kernels for the extra oomph. Great work.
ReplyDeleteI love these new Gingerbread builds. My droid has never ran better! The battery life is incredible! I slipped a little somethin' in your donation box. Have a couple of drinks on me. Great work Pete!
ReplyDeleteHas anyone else been experiencing problems receiving text messages? 100% of my outgoing texts are sent/received, but I'm only getting maybe 10% of incoming texts and all completely randomly. All coming from the big 4 carriers. VZW tech is at a loss (grumble), I've heard theories from it being the kernel, to an EMS (enhanced text message) exploit in the Droid... Just curious to see if anyone else running 2.3+ is having problems or knows of a fix.
ReplyDeleteI'm at my whit's end. :-?
Jess the first thing you need to do is "root" your droid. After that they easiest way is to get "Rom Manager" from the market, download this file to the root of your SD card. Go into Rom Manager, press "Install ROM from SD card", select this file and let it reboot. Do the same with the .60 LV kernel file (a few posts back).
ReplyDelete!Read the posts on the proper way to install first!
Would love if you could update your Downloads section of your website with all your kernels and these links to make it easy to find them. Thanks for all the time you have put into this and other projects.
ReplyDeleteJess one more mention to add to what Anonymous said...
ReplyDeleteif this is your fist time you need to wipe cache and user data
after you do that the fist time you wont have to do that in any future updates
Hi everyone I need to ask for clarification
ReplyDeleteStock Rooted Gingerbread
do this work with 32 gig sd card
anyone actually using this ?
thanks
Would love to install this but am a total newbie in flashing new ROM's. Any detailed instructions anywhere?
ReplyDeleteBTW, I'm an embedded systems software developer so I can follow very simple instructions most of the time....
Hey is there any kind of "special sauce" to that 600mhz kernel or do the faster kernels also have it?
ReplyDeleteWas super happy with GPA12, but was starting to notice lots of lag issues the longer I ran it. So happy to see the update to lucky 13, Pete. Awesome work. So far all the lag issues are gone. You're the man!
ReplyDeleteworks great thanks again Pete no issues my end best gb so far
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for releasing this! My Droid is working much better than before, and I am not experiencing any of the low ram issues I had with GPA12 (and the CM7 nightlies before that). This is especially impressive since I'm using the 600mhz LV kernel, where I was using the 1 GHz LV kernel before.
ReplyDeleteI am also curious as to what changes you made from AOSP to improve performance on our phone, if you are willing to share.
Pete,
ReplyDeleteGreat work, runs nice with the .6, but I like the speed of your 1.25. It's like its on steroids.
Just updated to GPA13. Haven't really had a chance to play with it, but I've downloaded the 0.6 GHz LV Kernel and the 1 Ghz LV Kernel. Will note any differences between Kernels.
ReplyDeletePeter Alfonso is my hero!
what happens if you throw a 1ghz kernel on this? I was running great with p3 1ghz medium voltage kernel. Great battery life too.
ReplyDeleteAlso... Set cpu? yay or nay?
ReplyDeleteNo problems receiving text messages here (yet.)
ReplyDeleteBeen running petes stuff for a month now with chevy kernal 1.1 ghz. No issues. Installed 600ghz and noticed a slow down.... no issues but man once I had the speed anything less just doesn't feel right. Great work peter!
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous. If only I could live without the dropdown notification widget.
ReplyDeleteThanks! GPA13 even with 600Mhz LV kernel is running very well. Quick question.. All your LV kernel's appear to have the same version number.. Even though I'm assuming you changed something in the just compiled 600Mhz Kernels? If so.. I would have thought the version would change. Will there be overclocked kernels coming with the same enhancement as the 600Mhz? Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteGood work!
ReplyDeleteHow do I block ads inside applications?
Hey, noobie question. Can this be used on a Milestone? Us Milestone users outside the USA are sufferers. Heck I only rooted mine and got FROYO on it about a month ago.
ReplyDeleteDidnt know you were a UCF student Pete! I'm a Valencia student in the area, pretty awesome I hope to buy you a beer sometime
ReplyDeleteu are the boss man. if i had money you'd definitely be donated too first!!! ill see if i can pull something together
ReplyDeleteWhat significant improvements can we expect to see over GPA12? I'm content with how it's running now, but I'd like to see what you're doing with the incremental updates. The reason I ask is because I'm not sure I want to risk the flash (small risk, I know) for no real benefit. I'm already running GPA12 and your LV 1GHz kernel, no problems. Also, to reiterate what several users have said and nobody has answered, what about your overclocked kernels? Can we expect to see the magic of your 600MHz on those? Is it already there? I'm just so confused!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure u guys know more than me about the DRIOD. I can not get it to root. It is a Droid 855 with build number FRG83D. can anyone let me know what I need to do
ReplyDeleteAnyone know if soup or root 1.8 rA will work to root with biuld number FRG83D
ReplyDeletelanningkelsie, follow these directions and you will have root.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-labs/74028-root-droid-1-regardless-os-version.html#post766732
soup or root worked for me, two different versions of frg83d successfully rooted (my friend had an older version, but still FRG83D)
ReplyDeleteCount me in as being confused about this kernel madness. Should we use set cpu at all with pete kernels? Is 2.3.3 just better coded? I'm most interested in the set cpu question.
ReplyDeleteSuperOneClickv1.7-ShortFuse
ReplyDeletewill root most all android
search the web for it
just make sure before you connect to set your android to usb debugging after its done you can undo usb debugging
Lanningkelsie
ReplyDeleteGoogle has all your answers. ;-)
Look up Droid rooting guide or something like that. There are tons of forums with walkthroughs on how to root your phone.
Can it works with milestone in with italian net?
ReplyDeleteThank you
Thanks Peter! GPA13 is working great so far on the 1.2 kernel. This has added so much fun and adventure to my tired old Droid, keep up the good work.
ReplyDeleteGPA13 is running well on my CDMA Milestone (A854) with your low voltage 600MHz kernel. I can't really see a big slow down with the LV 600, so I guess its working ok. I charged up and did a battery reset and hopefully this kernel will give a lot more battery life (compared to CM7). Thanks for your work.
ReplyDeleteUCF as in University of Central Florida? I graduated from there with a computer science degree in 19 somethin somethin. :-) Good to know they still have quality folks!
ReplyDeleteRunning GPA 13 with the 1.25 Ghz kernel clocked to 1 Ghz max / 600 Mhz min. The 600 Mhz kernel that came with GPA13 was good, but 1.25 Ghz is still way better. I clock it to 1 Ghz max because sometimes it feels like my droid can double as a skillet when clocked to the full 1.25 while watching flash video or playing snesoid/nesoid/n64oid. Still, totally amazing work. My droid 1 is now an equal when compared to my wife's stock droid x and my friends stock nexus 1 with gingerbread on it. I don't need to buy a new phone for quite sometime now. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteLast night, I reflashed the phone with the frg83D sbf (thank you pete), and then rerooted using SuperOneClick 1.7. For those having problems...you MUST follow the instructions in the XDA thread about turning on and off the USB debugging at the right times in the process. If you do that, it works absolutely fine with FRG83D.GPA13 is also running perfectly...as you say, no lag, even at 600Mhz. lots of free memory as well. Thanks again!
ReplyDeleteFor those who of you who want to root for the first time, follow this link. It worked great for me and I gave been a fan of Pete's work every since then!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-labs/74028-root-droid-1-regardless-os-version.html
@Mikron24 - Yes, many people are using this, and loving it, as I am. There should be no problem running this on a 32 GB card, no different than on a 16GB.
ReplyDeleteInstalled GPA13 last night, along with the .6Ghz kernel. I listened to music for about 30 minutes this morning with no issues, which is great news. Looking forward to seeing what it does for battery life.
And, most importantly, it passed the real acid test...Angry Birds played just fine.
running gpa13 with the petes 1.1 ghz lv and my phone is running better than ever. great battery life and all. not a hitch. thanks broseph
ReplyDelete@lanningkelsie - I had the same build and SOC worked. I now have su. I was looking at BB but GPA 13 intrigues me.
ReplyDeletePete - waited a while to upgrade beyond 2.2 - so spent this weekend going from 2.2 through kernel add ons through GPA12 and now GPA 13. Have to say my Droid is one happy camper. Now for one who prides herself on doing this stuff ( grandma of 6!!) I do have a dumb question. Can I delete all the old Froyo and previous Zip ROMS on my SD card once I'm up to GPA 13? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks for your hard work Peter, it is much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteAlso please if you enjoy Peters work shoot him $5 or $10 with the donate button top right.
@ peskemom if you are talking about the actual rom .zip files you downloaded before installing, yes those can be deleted after install. Dont delete your froyo backups though!
ReplyDeleteThis is my first time tampering with my phone OS, and though it took me some time to work out the details it was fun and I learned a lot about Android in the process.
ReplyDeleteThanks for making the build, I was ready to switch carriers to get the Nexus S, now I feel able to wait until my contract is up in August and save myself some wasted money.
Pete, been following your work since the early days of Bugless Beauty/Beast. Love the stock build, and it runs SMOOTH. Lag was so bad in Cyanogenmod builds I went back to Froyo.
ReplyDeleteThe the person putting in their .02 about Pete not telling how he got rid of the lag: Pete is obligated by the AOSP license (Open Source and all...) to release the source code to any modifications he distributes. The fact that it is open source is why we can get (and he can build) Pete's awesome rebuilds.
peskemom, you can delete the .zip files since those have since been extracted to your phone.
ReplyDeleteIs this mysterious new kernel tweak compatible with the overclocked kernels? I'm running Pete's 1Ghz kernel and while I don't have any complaints...there's always room for improvement.
ReplyDeleteCan you use this rom on droid 2?
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to install this using ROM Manager coming from Saphire but I can't seem to install. In ROM Manager, I select Install ROM from SD card and reference this ROM. It reboots after selecting Backup and Wipe Data but it just reboots back into the Saphire ROM.
ReplyDeleteDo I need to reset the device to factory default first before installing this ROM?
I'm on the Droid 1.
No, this is for the OG Droid 1 only!
ReplyDeleteI thought 2.3.2 was amazing, it ran super smooth at first, for some reason started getting homescreen redraw lag after a while. Minor 1 second delay though, nothing compared to the 20 second delays that used to occur. Have had 2.3.3 for almost a full day now, absolutely loving it. Working better than even 2.3.2, well worth the donation. On top of that I'm not even overclocking anymore, running your stock 600 mhz kernel plan to try the 600 LV soon. I went from envious of my other friends newer faster phones to being the envy as they just BARELY got froyo.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the difference between Motorola Droid 1 that I have and OG Droid 1? I thought they were the same.
ReplyDeleteOG is just a term we adopted for the original Droid. they are the same. Someone asked if it worked on the Droid 2.
ReplyDeleteEd, go to ROM Manager and reflash SP Recovery, then reflash Clockworkmod recovery. Your recovery system is f'd up that's why it just goes back to Sapphire when you install.
ReplyDeletethey are the same.
ReplyDelete@Ed, anonymous was replaying to the Anonymous before you asking about whether it was Droid 2 compatible. The OG Droid 1 and Motorola Droid 1 are the same phone. If you are coming from Sapphire yes you need to wipe data/cache.
ReplyDeleteAlso side note, I tried using ROM Manager myself to install it and couldn't get it to work, finally just went into clockword mod recovery and manually did it. Make sure to create a nandroid backup first, just incase.
Appreciate the work you put in on the .6 kernal, but the 1.2 Chevy Medium makes this ROM Rock! Switching from Elite 5.0.2. Thanks Pete!
ReplyDeleteBeen running on the included 600khz kernel for 24 hours with not a single problem. GPA12 at 1.0khz LV had been random rebooting two or three times a day. But no reboots at all yet with GPA13 at 600. Of course, I can't leave well enough alone - time to start experimenting with faster kernels and lower voltage. Wish me luck!
ReplyDeleteHey Peter - Great ROM! I was wondering, where do I go to download gmail, since it isn't stock after flashing the new ROM? Obviously I can't search for it on android market, as I need to be logged into my gmail account to do so. I looked around on the web, but haven't had any luck finding the actual gmail app for my droid. Thoughts?
ReplyDeleteThanks again!
Nice work Pete. When will you be working on BB?
ReplyDeleteHey Peter - how do I install the gmail app on my droid after flashing this new ROM? (which is sweet, by the way!!)
ReplyDeleteThanks Peter I just got it installed tonight and it's working awesome!
ReplyDeleteJeremiah, you can download the Gmail app as well as other google apps directly from the market
ReplyDeleteJeremiah market on your phone
ReplyDeletePeter said
Once again I will mention, no Market applications are included in this ROM.
Running gpa13 & Pete's .6 lv kernel and its working great. Battery life is excellent
ReplyDeleteAny power control widgets in GPA13?
ReplyDeleteAny power control widgets in the status bar?
ReplyDeleteThanks
So Jeremiah, you know how to root your handset and flash a new ROM, but you can't install an app? ;)
ReplyDeleteJust echoing other sentiments here; great job Pete, and thanks for the hard work.
This ROM blows away both CM and PE on my particular handset.
The change log said it included the TUN module. I can't seem to find the complied tun.ko file for new kernel. Does anyone have one that works?
ReplyDeleteI am unable to install this 2.3.3 rom while coming from 2.3.2. It installs using rom manager but gets stuck at the login screen! The Motorola part. Even after wiping cache and all that. Any ideas!
ReplyDeletePete,
ReplyDeleteOG Droid owner. Here I thought I was stuck with a slow Droid... After reading about your ROM and Kernals, I made the leap! Rooted, installed this Rom, running the 1Ghz LV Kernal.. I swear this is a new phone!! It runs so smooth!! Apps load instantly. No problems to report after 1 day of use. I can't thank you enough. Donation Made! Thanks again!! Nice Work!!
- jon
Hey Pete, where can we get the host file you put in the latest BB to block ads?
ReplyDeleteSo far so good.
ReplyDeleteWhat SetCPU settings are folks using for a high and low and also for the scaling?
TonyB
No wake up problems like on GPA10-12! Running stock 600mhz kernel! Amazing Pete! This rom runs perfectly! Donation on its way!
ReplyDeleteP.s. let me know what your next phone will be because that's the phone I'm getting!
SORRY IF THIS QUESTION HAS ALREADY BEEN ASKED, but a friend of mine has a Droid x and wants to root and flash for the first time. I have flashed GAP11,12,and 13 to my OG Droid over the past couple of months and he like look of my phone a lot. Will the GPA13 ROM work on a Droid x also or is it for the OG Droids only. BTW thanks a bunch Pete for all your hard work on these builds, I have fallen in love with my OG Droid all over again.
ReplyDeletePS, since flashing the GPA13 ROM I have noticed that the sound quality in phone calls is much better sounding - has anyone else noted this or is it just me?
question about kernels...GPA12 was the first rom i ever put on my phone and now with GPA13 i think i'm getting the hang of this but can someone tell me what the process is for flashing a kernel to the phone? i haven't seen too many instructions on this and i want to try pete's 1ghz.. any help would be appreciated
ReplyDeletehello everyone seems a common question about add block coming up
ReplyDeletehttp://lifehacker.com/#!5612338/adfree-blocks-ads-on-your-rooted-android-phone
Thanks for the amazing release. I'll admit, I'd never rooted my phone before this, and simply rooted and installed with the including kernel. Can someone either tell me (or point me to a link) where I can learn what I'd gain/lose by going to a) the 600lv as opposed to the included sv and then b) what I gain/lose by going to the higher kernels?
ReplyDeleteHi Peter,
ReplyDeleteI loaded GPA12 a few weeks ago. On Monday night I upgraded to GPA13 and it been running great for 2 days now. WOW, what an improvement! More stable, better battery life and much faster.... and on your first release of 2.3.3! I have over 500 contacts in phone and for the first time my shortcuts snap when they are clicked. Nice work on the 600lv kernel!
Donation is on the way to say thanks for all your hard work! Cheers!
I have to say this is the only phone I didnt care about having for a while. I never felt like I was left behind in the cell phone game. All thanks to PETER! Keep doin what you do!
ReplyDeleteIs there an order of sequence we should be using for the builds? I had to wipe my phone coming from GPA12 as I was stuck in a boot loop. So I flashed GPA13. Should I be doing that first or the 600 LV kernel or does it not matter? Also I am trying to load these with ROM manager premium but it does not seem to want to restart.
ReplyDeleteWOW this update and the 1.25ghz low voltage kernel from Pete...is SERIOUS...my phone is running obnoxious fast...and the o.s has definitely been tweaked a lot...it is running so smooth...UPDATE TO THIS ASAP ITS AMAZING
ReplyDeletePete Please tell us all here how to apply the right kernel to GPA013 like the 1.25 what do you mean apply comp catch in terminal? and also what settings in SetCPU apply : i have my setCPU 600 TO 850
ReplyDeletethis might help a lot of people
To install a Kernel you can use the ROM Manager just like you install the ROM it's self. Just choose the Kernel .zip file instead.
ReplyDeleteHi Peter, thank you a lot for this great work.
ReplyDeleteNoTrump here, writing from Italy. Our Droid is a MOTOROLA A855 named MILESTONE, this is the EURO STANDARD VERSION.
I suppose it to be the same hardware of US MOTOROLA DROID 1, but I took a glance in "build.prop" and I found "Verizon" and other links to US specific sites-brands-provider.
I'm a novice in ROM Updating (this will be my first time, ehehehe), could you tell us, Italian People, if your GPA13 is suitable also for Motorola Milestone or not?
Thanks a lot, cheers.
I installed GPA13 and LV 600 kernel last night and my Droid now has new life.
ReplyDeleteThis was my first ROM install, so I will say if you are new to this, try ClockworkMod Revovery to manage your ROMs. It will make you a backup and makes it very easy to install the new kernel and OS.
Thanks Pete. My Droid is now fast again. It seems to be running much cooler too and I am anxious to see how much extra battery life I get.
Can someone please explain how to activate compcache? I know Pete said it's in the kernel, plus I found the script in /system/xbin. I assume it needs to run at some point in the boot process. Where do I set it? I would just like to try it and see if it makes a difference for me but info is not plentiful.
ReplyDeleteNoTrump, the Milestone is a GSM device while the Droid is CDMA. I don't think Pete's rom will work for the Milestone unfortunately, though there are other Milestone roms out there.
ReplyDeletemy ro.product.device is equal to "umts_sholes" is it ok for me to flash this rom??
ReplyDeletei'm the guy of the "umts_sholes" config, I found out some other information that might be useful,
ReplyDeleteModel: Milestone A853
FCC ID: IHDP56KC2 = GSM (Quad-Band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) & Dual-Band Euro 3G (900/2100))
ro.product.device=umts_sholes
ro.build.product=umts_sholes
ro.product.board=sholes
ro.product.locale.region=GB
is it ok for me to delete or modify the line;
assert(getprop("ro.product.device") == "sholes" ||
getprop("ro.build.product") == "sholes");
in the updater-script file??
Thank you in advance
@Denzig, you may do so at your own peril, I have no idea what will work and what wont. It's your choice.
ReplyDeletebut it won't brick my phone? anyway I have open recovery and I already backed up, thank you for such a quick answer, so is it safe to "test" this rom and see what works and what doesn't works, otherwise flash the backup back?
ReplyDelete@ Jeremiah, you dont need the gmail app to use the market. lol. did you even try signing in when you opened the market?
ReplyDeleteHow do you get the lock screen to look like the one in the picture?
ReplyDeletePete you're back! Please answer some of the many questions from people confused as to which Kernel is best. Is there something new and different about the included 600 stock kernel or will any of the other kernels work just as well?
ReplyDeleteI'm coming from GPA12. Seeing as you have to re-install the apps, Aren't you better off doing a Wipe Data and cache anyway. Or can you most of the time get by without doing this, so it saves you having to reconfigure the apps you have to re-download.
ReplyDeleteRooted my Droid for the first time two days ago. Long story, but I tried last year and spent several hours trying to unf**k my Droid from an endless boot loop. Needless to say to I am rocking this as my first custom ROM and using the 1GHz lv kernel. So far, so good. Will be dropping my offering in the church donation basket. Thanks PA!
ReplyDelete@Anonymous asking about wiping data, why would you have to reinstall apps if you don't wipe data? they should all still be there when you flash GPA13. If you do choose to wipe data, just dl titanium backup and you wont have to reconfigure anything at all.
ReplyDelete@anon. I have used all of the GPA Roms from Pete. I only wiped cache the first time I rooted to GPA10. After that, whenever I've updated, I do not have to reinstall apps. Everything is there. I am using the ROM manager which seems easy, but I did research how to use it. The is the first time I've rooted my droid (newb), and it has been a great experience. Pete's work is outstanding and I have a new droid that ROCKS like a GATOR!
ReplyDeleteMy Specs:
GPA13, 1.1ghz Kern., SetCPU at 400/1100. Battery life is beyond expectations.
How do I get the theme from the picture!!!
ReplyDeletePeter can do a kernel with support CIFS (cifs.ko)
ReplyDeletejust really need to Thank
Thanks Pete. Awesome work!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous: the wallpaper in the picture is in Wallpaper->Live Wallpapers->Neural Network.
ReplyDeleteIm have an OG droid running 2.2.1 GRG83D Ive been researching the whole rooting thing and installing custom ROMS and from what I call tell Petes puts out awsome stuff. I Really want to install his version of Gingerbread but Im A noob! can someone help me? I need instructions on how to root my phone. I have so many questions, everything i read is a little differant! will I loose all my apps? can I back up my phone so if I dont like it i can restore it back the way it was? what do they mean by putting the rom on the root of the sd card? will someone give me detailed dummy instructions?

Everything is there. I am using the ROM manager which seems easy, but I did research how to use it. The is the first time I've rooted my droid (newb), and it has been a great experience. Pete's work is outstanding and I have a new droid that ROCKS like a GATOR!
My Specs:
GPA13, 1.1ghz Kern., SetCPU at 400/1100. Battery life is beyond expectations.
________________________________________________
My experience was the same. I wiped the data and cache before installing GPA13 and all my previous applications downloaded automatically from the market. Easy as pie. By the way, I am the follow noob. (posted my experience earlier today).
Mike S., thank you so much. I was hoping someone would help me out.

ReplyDeleteHow to root droid 1 regardless of OS. You won't lose your apps. Once you're rooted you won't go back.
Awesome job Peter! I've been bouncing around from ROM to ROM trying to find the perfect one, and this is BY FAR the best one. Also running the 1 Ghz kernel and it's like having a brand new phone.
ReplyDeleteOne question: I also have a non-rooted OG Droid and I want to put the SholesQuickOffice.apk on it. Will it work or does the droid have to be rooted to run that?
Donation coming your way to keep up the good work!
Great job! This build is a lot more responsive than the last build!
ReplyDeleteOne question though, with the standard builds, the phone can read wmv and wma files but on this Gingerbread version, I cannot and had to get a external program. Can someone help me get the codecs necessary for the phone to do this natively once more?
Daniel, you can just download Quick office from the Market, so no you do not have to be rooted, but I personally would recommend Docs to go.
ReplyDelete@Daniel, QuickOffice should work on the unrooted Droid unless for some odd reason it needs to be installed into system/app, which i doubt.
ReplyDeletehow do i manually install this? i unzipped and put into nandroid file....now i have "meta" and a "system" folder in nandroid..which do i choose?
ReplyDeleteThe 600Mhz LV Kernel is incredible! No lag and awesome batterylife.
ReplyDeletethanks!
First and foremost Thank You Pete!!!
ReplyDeleteFor some reason I was having lag issues with the std600 kernel and the lv600. So, I decided to go with a faster lv1.10 and this thing flies with good battery life!
@Anonymous asking how to manually install.
ReplyDeletePete's GB ROM was the first custom ROM I flashed and although worried at first I love it.
Disclaimer: For those having a hard time finding how to flash a custom ROM here are the steps I took (For some reason auto flashing through ROM Manager wouldn't work). Make sure to do your research as well. I ain't responsible for bootloops, bricking, or spontaneous combustion =).
1. Make sure you are rooted. If you aren't google how to, there are lots of guides. Someone even posted a link to the one I used a while ago up above. May take a while to read around but well worth it.
2. Download the Pete's GB zip file and place it in the root of your SD card. DO NOT UNZIP IT. Same with custom kernel zip file if you want one.
3. Download ROM Manager from the Android Market (Free version is fine).
3. Flash ClockworkMod Recovery using ROM Manager.
4. Turn off your Motorola Droid.
5. Hold the x button (on keyboard) and turn on the phone.
6. Once in recovery mode make a Nandroid backup.
7. Once back-up is made choose clear data/factory reset and clear cache (You will lose all data/apps/settings, but apps should resynch) I've read you should clear the data/cache a couple times to make sure its all gone.
8. Choose "install zip from SDcard"
9. Choose "Choose zip from sdcard"
10. Choose Pete's ROM (eg. GPA13Deodexed.zip assuming you haven't changed the name)
11. Confirm, wait for it to finish and then choose reboot at the main menu.
12. Set up your google account start working on your settings and enjoy the awesomeness.
P.S. Flashing a custom kernel is the same process but you don't need to clear data/factory reset or clear cache.
Lastly, anyone know about whether you need to clear the Dalvik cache? I didn't know about it till later, wondering if it makes a difference.
If for some reason your phone bootloops or something, just go to nandroid and pick recover and choose the back up you made, it should revert you back to your original state, read more find out what went wrong and try again =)
@Anonymous asking how to install, delete all those files you unzipped, redownload the rom, put it on the root of your sd card, rename it update.zip(NOT update.zip.zip or Update.zip). From recovery make a backup of ur current rom, then hit "allow update.zip installation" and hit install update.zip. The nandroid folder is where your backups are stored. you should not be putting files in it manually.
ReplyDeleteHas anyone figured out why I can't sue swype on any Gingerbread ROMs? I'm using the lateist BB on Froyo. And loving all of petes work! But I text like MAD and am addicted to swype :-( I've tried Pete's GPA12 and the lateist Gingerbread CM and neither have swype support... it says, "this phone is not supported" AFTER installing swype... it shows the keyboard and let's me type on it, but not actually swype on the swype keyboard? Thanks Pete!
ReplyDeleteSwype works for me on CM7. do you have the latest swype installer? You cant just install swype without going through the installer.
ReplyDeleteJust like everyone else, love the new updates. Currently running GPA13 with Pete's 1Ghz kernel. Only complaints are that there is no battery percentage (not really a problem, just miss it from old bugless beast) and my swype keyboard works marvelously except that when I click on a word to bring up the swype suggestions, android brings up copy, select text, etc. functions. Not a big problem. Just annoying. Just wondering if there's a simple fix besides to stop using swype. Thanks btw.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous, the copy paste thing that pops up is a new GB feature. What I did is just get used to hitting the swpye button on the bottom left corner of the screen instead of double tapping the word. It does the exact same thing. Maybe a future update to Swype will address this issue.
ReplyDelete@Anonymous, thanks for the swype tip! I am now a happier person!
ReplyDeleteThere is a new swype update out that disables the double tap to edit on GB devices and forces you to use the swype button. Uninstall previous version of swype and use swype installer to get the latest version.
ReplyDeleteIs there a way to get DSP manager? I've seen it on past ROMS I had (likely 2.2's and unstable 2.3's). I can't find it on the market or on a simple one minute search. Is there a ginger friendly DSP manager?
ReplyDeleteAwesome job on the GPA13 though, P.A. Stable, pretty good battery life and the speed is slick despite it being a 600LV kernal.
Pete, anyway we could get an 800 mhz SV kernel? (Or whichever one you were including with your stock rooted froyo roms)
ReplyDeletePete,
ReplyDeleteI installed GPA13 on my Droid I and see that tethering is missing. Will this be rectified soon? Next to use as a phone, Tethering is my main use for the Droid.
Thanks,
Jim
lol, Wow 153 post in 7 days and Pete only replys to 2, at least jump in every now and then, and tell people thinks for all the kind words on my hard work...anyway this sounds like a great rom, and I will be trying it out, and donating if its as good as everyone is saying, well I'll donate anyway for all the work he's already done....these guys that put out the roms for us deserve it, even if its a small donation here and there.
ReplyDelete@jsiler, just download wired tether and/or wifi tether and youll be fine. http://code.google.com/p/android-wired-tether/downloads/detail?name=wired_tether_1_4.apk&can=2&q=
ReplyDeletehttp://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk&can=2&q=
I switched kernels from Slayer 1.0 lv to Chevy #1 1.0 lv and Wireless Tether started working again!
ReplyDeleteThis is incredible!!! Running with the 600mhz lv and seem to be outperforming BBv0.6.2.1 @ 800mhz. Knowing Pete can build kernels now makes me excited. Plus kudos to Pete for getting AAC decoding to work properly, unlike with every froyo rom, so I can enjoy good quality sound from Pandora over 3g.
ReplyDeleteThis is amesome, awesome, awesome, awesome...oh and did I say AWESOME!!!!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait for the Bugless Beast version to come out. Pete, when is it coming? Your fans are waiting!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm loving this ROM. I swear my phone has never been this quick. Keep up the awesome work!
ReplyDeleteSimply awesome. This is the first ROM I have ever installed. I used the 1GHZ Low voltage kernal.
ReplyDeleteany tips on getting bluetooth Wireless Tether to work with the XOOM again?
Donate to Pete!
The crowd starts to chant: GPA-1-4, GPA-1-4, GPA-1-4, GPA-1-4, GPA-1-4, GPA-1-4!
ReplyDeleteWe love you Pete!
GPA13 with Lv1ghz kernel running smooth with good temps/ battery life and no lag. Apps also open noticably faster. Set CPU underclocked to 225 min 600 max. Was running BB 0.6.2.1 previous to this which ran hotter on my Droid although it ran well. Only things I miss are the transparent notification window, AM & PM for clock, and % on battery meter. Great work Pete you are the man!
ReplyDeleteI was shocked--laughed aloud shocked--when I installed this on my original Motorola Droid. Peter's software has been working all day without a problem.
ReplyDeleteAnd the instructions here and elsewhere made it easier than I could have ever expected.
I clicked the DONATE button and followed through with $5--a small thanks for the great work.
Pete....Great work! Performance is good, but nothing a little overclock won't take care of. I'll be donating as well! Thanks for all the time and effort you put into this!
ReplyDeleteAWESOME
ReplyDeleterunning the 1.0 LV over clock
Donation sent!
Much better than the last version! No more choppy audio and runs much faster. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteGPA13 was my first ROM install and I feel very lucky to have started with the best. Donation will be on the way.
ReplyDeleteAnd FWIW, Counterpath's Bria (SIP client) seems to have *better* audio quality over 3G than the Verizon ROM. Something is running more smoothly in there.
Oh, and also, it would be awesome for your upcoming GPA builds to have AM and PM by the time in the notification bar. And have the percentage show on the battery.
ReplyDeleteUsing 1.0 LV Kernel. A perfect update to my old droid while I wait for 4G from Verizon. Donation sent, thank you.

I managed to get DSP running on 2.3 - GPA14. It is stable. Get libaudiopolicy.so from http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod4milestone/issues/detail?id=386 to replace the one on your phone. Then install DSP Manager. Here is the version I installed https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_packages_apps_DSPManager

I don't think i've seen the issue i'm having above, so here it goes...
ReplyDeleteAnybody have a problem which says 'installation aborted' while following the above instructions and choosing 'apply sdcard:update.zip (rom manager reboot)?
I have moto droid 1.
Okay, this may sound like a dumb question to everyone since all of you likely do this all the time, but I don't so just bear with me. How do I install those other applications (i.e. Youtube, Gmail, StreetView, etc.)? Do I need to flash them? if so I need help. Either way, I need help.
ReplyDeletePlease HELP I have been trying to Root my Droid for almost two days now and I can't
ReplyDeleteI have FRG83G 2.2.2.
Awesome. Awesome. Awesome.
ReplyDeleteMessed around with SuperOneClick with no luck. Switched to MotoCache's guide here: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/droid-labs/74028-root-droid-1-regardless-os-version.html#post766732
Got much closer, but was still boot looping. Pulling the battery didn't help but dropping back into SPrecovery post-ROM-install and clearing all the caches again did the trick.
Awesome.
Hey i have an sony xperia X10 would this work for me.
