Once again, my stock Gingerbread ROM has been updated, bringing the build number to GPA12. The changes in this build mainly consist of perfecting a few things myself and others have noticed. I used Google Maps alot this past week and realised the screen was not as bright as I would like it to be while driving in the sun. Because of this I raised the maximum brightness value to take advantage of its full potential. While digging around in the source code I noticed the blur effect/animation was disabled so I went ahead and enabled it. An Android community member by the name of "blunden" noticed that the Desk Clock (Alarm Clock) app was missing some Gingerbread images so I added those. The MMS app only allowed a user to send 100 txt messages per hour which is too low for those of you who may text non stop so I increased the amount to 200. Some users requested that I increase the wifi scan interval to save some battery life so I went ahead and brought it to 45 seconds from 15. Since there will be no true "OTA" Gingerbread updates from Motorola I removed the "System updates" preference screen. I was notified that the built in usb tethering does not work on the Droid so I also removed its preference screen. If you would still like to use usb tethering download and install "Wired Tether For Root Users". If you look at the screen timeout options list in the Display settings you may notice a large jump between 2 and 10 minutes, to resolve this I have added a 5 minute option. Lastly, I have included the latest version of the Market (2.3.2) and Superuser apps. This will most likely be my last stock build until more Droid specific bug fixes are found or until Google pushes an updated version of Gingerbread. Do not take that as bad news, that simply means I can start working on Bugless Beast! For those of you who are new to this ROM I highly recommend that you read all three of my post on this site before installing. Sorry about the content of this post not flowing well together, I am pretty tired tonight and this type of information is better read in a changelog that will come soon.
No need to wipe if coming from GPA09 or greater.

AWESOME
ReplyDeleteWay to go Pete, you truly are the only reason my Droid is as good as it is. Any stats on battery life?
Just wanted to say thanks for putting in a the work you have for this ROM. Keep it up man.
ReplyDeleteThanks, Pete! Great work! I owe you a beer.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
ReplyDeleteThanks for updates.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that the Gingerbread ROMs you have made are missing the SholesQuickOffice.apk.
Gracias mi amigo! You're awesome :)
ReplyDeletePete awesome work! I love this rom and my droid has never run better! Smooth, quick and most importantly, it works! Few things though if you could just make one more update:
ReplyDelete1. Make option in messaging app to NOT vibrate when in a call(annoying and loud to caller).
2. LED color change per apps. Ie messaging blue, missed call red, etc.
3. Restart button(long-press hold).
I love this rom but might need to go back to Cyanogen b.c of the vibrating and LED sometimes not blinking. Hope you can include those updates and thank you again! Donating for sure!
HOLY SWEET JESUS! This is the best thing I've seen yet. Many many many THANKS for this. You even included the screen off animation! I've never seen that before! Again, THANK YOU!!!! You have breathed life into this stainless steel paperweight yet once again! AWESOME!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteAwesome stuff, but is there an easy way to disable the blur animation? It's really slow for me.
ReplyDeleteI'm assuming we should still flash the alternate Kernel? GPA10 is running good for me but can't wait for BB,
ReplyDeleteHey Pete how about a Honeycomb ROM for the NC.
:)
how do I root my droid x and install the new update
ReplyDeletecan u add to skip music with long pressing the up volume key...thank u if u can plzs...nd nice work
ReplyDeleteThank you PA. respectfully request to know possibility of phone portion of car mode be sensed to rotate to landscape?
ReplyDeleteI'm running GPA11 with the 1Ghz Slayer Kernal you suggested, and it's AMAZING. Thanks for the magnificant ROM! It's the best my phone has ever had.
ReplyDeleteNow, before I update to GPA12, I have a stupid question. Will I need to flash the custom kernal again after this? It's no biggie, really, if I had to. Just wondering :)
Also, slight bug (sorry if it has already been reported/fixed): the Gallery app is pretty unstable. With the new kernal, it zooms, but it still has a tendancy to crash itself and restart while trying to load albums. If you give it a sec to load before doing anything, it'll usually be okay. But it's still unstable. Other than that, I've found no problems with this ROM. It really is awesome.
Thanks again! Keep up the good work.
I'm a NOOB root user.
ReplyDeleteI rooted my Droid last weekend and used BB all week. While it was better than the regular operating system, I still had some lag issues. That also may have been because I took full advantage of moving a lot of my apps to my SD card to free up phone storage space.
I will try this now and see how it goes. So far though, it has been fantastic. (I am using the slayher kernel you posted as well with the SetCPU app.)
I would love some theme options for this ROM, especially in dark pink or dark purple, but will run as is until I know for sure I am going to like it. It's a pain to go through and set everything up on the phone every time I change ROMs (ringtones, handcent settings, screen widgets, etc.).
THANK YOU!!
Is this one overclocked to 800 or no?
ReplyDeleteThanks for keeping my phone a bad machine. Much appreciated.
ReplyDeleteLove the ROM! Since everyone is requesting features, may I request NO added features? I think that is the intent with this version anyway. There are plenty of ROMs out there that add tons of crap if you want that. I am happy for one that just keeps the latest Android on my OG Droid and doesn't get too flashy and unstable. Understated elegance.
ReplyDeleteAll this time I thought you gave up on Rom hacking after I saw you stopped updating your posts on the various Android forums you were on. Good to see you're back and making 2.3 ROMS. Amazing. Will definitely be awaiting your 2.3 Bugless Beast :)))
ReplyDeleteIt looks like this release also fixed the slow power on bug that 11 had. YAY!
ReplyDeletePete,
ReplyDeleteThanks for bringing Gingerbread to the Droid :). I have a couple questions concerning the Gingerbread ROM.
1. There was a fix for the following issue that was supposed to be released in 2.3. Disapointing that Motorola will not push this to the Droid, since 2.2 broke wifi for several universities/corporate environments. Can you confirm that this patch was included in 2.3?
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=8804
2. Also, with stock Gingerbread - GPS was altered in a way that apps such as Tasker have been locked out from toggling. Is this something you can alter, or maybe best left for your next iteration of Bugless Beast :)
Thanks for all the work you've provided to the original Droid!
@Chris, If that issue was submitted to Google and they said it was included in 2.3 then yes it will be in this ROM as well.
ReplyDeleteyay for the alarm clock. I missed him.
ReplyDeleteAnd also, i miss your v6 theme of the phone being black. Not that, that is a big issue, it was just missed.
Thank you for your work.
Hopefully this fixes the rebooting and slow screen activation problems as well? I'm not sure what the problem is.
ReplyDeleteIs it gonna be in Rom Manager
ReplyDeleteThis is my second ROM, the first was GPA10. Amazing. I feel like I have a brand new phone.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much.
I was hoping to see the Gingerbread Icons that you made. Seems like a lot of work to just change an icon for us.
PA, This ROM is great. It breaths another level of life into the real DROID, and with the 1ghz add-on, who needs to change hardware?
ReplyDeleteOne item that I have missed for the last few days since going to this ROM is the ability to do voice entries like when txting. Are you looking into using this feature again? It also was my favorite way to tell iPhone users that they are missing out.
Is Titanium Backup compatable with this ROM? Thanks in advance.
ReplyDeletePete, great work! I agree with the others about how nice this makes the phone. I also ran Quadrant on mine and scored 1004 with the 1G kernel. Pretty good for a D1. The only issue I noticed was slow loading of the home screen. Is there any validity to the older rom trick to keep the loader in memory for faster display? The trick in question is this:
ReplyDeleteIn a terminal,
type su and enter.
Then type echo ro.HOME_APP_ADJ=1 >> /data/local.prop and enter.
Then reboot.
It seems faster but I have no way to verify if it's really doing anything or if it's just the placebo effect.
How i do to flash this rom on my milestone? i use OpenRecovery to flash cyanogen, more OpenRecovery not install this rom.
ReplyDeletewhat i do?
Thanks! Can you add an option to change the boot animation to the standard android?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
even though this stock. U should still put the reboot button jus for a tiny little mod
ReplyDeleteIs the Alarm clock no longer a selectable app shortcut to put on the home screen? I always had that to switch between alarms (mostly for the days I don't have to be up at the crack of dawn). I can get to it by first going to the Clock app, but I'd like to not have to take the extra step. Otherwise, I'd say this is a great job!
ReplyDeleteThis version of your build is amazing--my phone is literally running better than it ever has before (and Google Goggles works without ipv6 errors, which makes me happy). Thank you so much for your hard work!
ReplyDeleteFYI, for those out there, I am running the Slayher 1 ghz kernel...I'm thinking about trying the Slayher 1.1 ghz kernel as that's what I was running on my old setup.
Has anybody gotten Bluetooth PAN wireless tethering working with any combination of kernels and GPA12?
ReplyDeleteLike it so far. Only problem I found was volume down only goes to vibrate. I cant wait for bugless beast because I miss the email button on the main screen.
ReplyDeleteDonation on its way Peter. Thank you for inspiring me to take the plunge and root my Droid. Although a total noob, was able to do research and get thru the total process in a couple of hours. A couple of observations (certainly not complaints!)
ReplyDelete1. When using pattern screen lock, there is some lag until the screen responds to the touch
2. When enabling GPS such as in navigation, occassionally I lose signal lock (indefinitely) or the GPS doesn't ever gain lock (not a signal level issue).
Looking forward to your next update!
@Eric, install my 1Ghz kernel and do not wipe data and cache. All lag will disappear. And lastly, thanks!
ReplyDeleteGreat Work Pete!! Thanks a lot
ReplyDeleteJust came back to say, I fixed most of the issues. I didn't realize I hadn't installed a new kernel, the Slayher you provided. Phone runs almost perfect now! I was rearing to upgrade to a LTE device but now I might be able to wait til the end of the year when the REAL good stuff is revealed/released. It's so fast and I love Gingerbread. Hopefully you can port Honeycomb over one day too? =)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! I'll donate when I get paid Thursday, I too a starvin' poor college kid!
Hey Peter, I love the ROM. It's very fast and I get great battery life. The only thing that I have a problem with is Launcherpro restarting. I assume it's when I am low on memory. The same thing happens with ADW launcher but not as often. One fix that I read about involved editing a /data/local.prop. It worked for awhile but the problem came back. Do you have any suggestions? CM7 seems to handle this well but their nightlies are too laggy on my phone.
ReplyDeleteHi all- I'm running the latest BB 0.6.2 which is a froyo build. Has anyone switchedd from what I'm running to this gingerbread build, and if so, what are the benefits of new build?
ReplyDeleteI understand what this build WON'T have since its stock, but what does the os have that this does?
I've read the press release for 2.3, but was hoping to get some specific comments from users. Thoughts?
B. Hurd
If your alarm clock app force closes, redownload the ROM and flash, for some reason the upload caused some issues the first time but I reuploaded it shortly after and it is fixed.
ReplyDeletePlease someone confirm. It is possible to install this fabulous rom on a Milestone A853? If not please suggest whats the android phone thats ruling out there (easy to mod and stuff)... Appreciate your comments.
ReplyDeleteNewbie questions...
ReplyDeleteHow can I apply the room to my droid? I don't have any root software. Help is welcome and very appreciated.
regards.
Jos.
Wow Pete This is an absolutely amazing rom I would have to say the BEST!!! No random restarts!!! only question I have is the slow loading of the home widgets and app drawer due to the Dalvick cache??? It doesn't load too slow but i notice a lag and also the home screen is blank and it takes about 3 secs for it to populate with apps and widgets....
ReplyDeleteRooted Moto D1
OC to 1ghz slayer kernel
Thank you so much for posting this! So far, it is running flawlessly on my phone - tethering is even working, which I had given up a long time ago. Why do you think this runs so much better on the Droid than CM7? They are both based on AOSP - is it possible that some of the changes and features in CM actually make it run worse on the Droid?
ReplyDeleteAny good guides on how to root/install this on Original Droid? Wife's going to be upgrading her phone this summer likely, and I'd like to see if we can breathe new life into in the meantime.
ReplyDeleteThank you Pete! You are doing a great job. upgraded from GPA10/1.0Ghz Slayer to GPA12/1.0Ghz Slayer last week. It is working flawlessly on my OD. Both have been more stable than the clean FRG83/1.0Ghz P3 version I used for several months. You have made the OD one of the best. It out preforms my wife's stock D2. How can I donate to you?
ReplyDelete@Jim, thanks for the kind words. There is a donate button in the sidebar of this website, thanks!
ReplyDeleteGreat work on the rom (as usual) . Will you also create an odexed version? Or a 2.3.3 version with NFC? Just curious ...thanks again for your hard and quality work.
ReplyDeleteYou're BRILLIANT.
ReplyDeleteThank you for all of your hard work!!!
@Anonymous - the rooting instruction and much more can be found at this website http://www.droid-life.com/
ReplyDeletePete: great job on gpa12 man.. I havnt seen a more stable and clean rom since your bb1.1 rom for 2.1...
ReplyDeleteThat said, I really miss stock usb teather on froyo.. any way it might show up in gpa13?
Looks like a solid rom, are you going to be updating it to Android 2.3.3 for gpa13?
ReplyDeleteI've been using BB on my Droid for the last few versions, and I just switched over to GPA17 a few days ago. It works really well, and with the animations turned off it's even better on battery life than BB had been. Thanks very much.
ReplyDeleteI do have one question: will the built-in USB tethering work without me having the tethering as part of my Verizon plan? I haven't had any luck with the "wired tether for root users" app I used to use with BB, but the built-in tether works great. I'm just worried about the bill. Thanks again, man.
Hey there, I was wondering if you could help me with getting a droid tablet with a destroyed/formatted internal nand card work again. We could communicate via e-mail if you're willing to help me. Thanks
