Unleash The Beast V0.1 Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S)

Well my Mom got her new Samsung Captivate (Galaxy S) in the mail yesterday. Before she even got to hold the phone I rooted it! The screen is phenomenal, like candy for your eyes. I can't wait untill this phone hits Verizon! Enough with the rambling, you Captivate users came here to know what I did for you...

So far this is just a teaser so I am going to call this tool "Unleash The Beast". Eventually it will become a full ROM but for now it makes a whole bunch of tweaks/changes by simply running an update.zip file in recovery mode. Oh, almost forgot to mention, it will root your Samsung Captivate as well.

So what does this "Unleash The Beast" tool do? Thought you'd never ask, find out after the jump:

  • Will root your Samsung Captivate (if you already have root that is ok too)
  • Install the latest version of BusyBox (V1.18)
  • Install Wireless Tether App (V2.0.5) (turns phone into a router for free)
  • Install Market Access App (V1.0.6) (Can uncensor your market)
  • Install News & Weather App (a.k.a. Genie Widget)
  • Blocks Advertisements in Apps & Browser
  • Removes the AT&T Boot Animation
  • Removes Power On Sound
  • Removes Power Off Sound
  • Removes AT&T Family Map App
  • Removes AT&T Music App
  • Removes AT&T Maps App
  • Removes AT&T Navigator App
  • Removes AT&T Radio App
  • Removes AT&T Hot Spots App
  • Removes Days App
  • Removes Daily Briefing App
  • Removes Google Maps (download from market to have the latest version)
  • Removes Memo App
  • Removes Mini Diary App
  • Removes Mobile Banking App
  • Removes Mobile Video App
  • Removes MobiTV App
  • Removes My Files App (Astro File Manager is WAY better)
  • Removes Where App
  • Removes Write And Go App
  • Removes Yellow Pages App

For those of you worried you will need any of these apps there are better replacements for them in the Market. Trust me you will not miss any of them once you flash this tool. If you are still worried I will eventually make a restore tool that will add them back if need be.

Installation Instructions:
  1. Download unleashthebeastv0.1.zip
  2. Rename to update.zip
  3. Place on sdcard (the built in card, not the removable)
  4. Boot into recovery mode
(shut off phone, then hold power, volume up, & volume down at the same time)
  5. Select "Reinstall Packages"
  6. Enjoy, you have now Unleashed The Beast!

  6. Pete,

The question is, does your mom really know how awesome you are at this? Or was she like, oh thanks sweetie.

That is awesome that you just made it happen that quick for her, and really the world. ;)

  10. I've gotta say, seeing not too many devs push over to the Captivate (our two biggest Galaxy S devs are more interested in the Vibrant), I'm really glad to see someone committing to interest in the Captivate.

Keep up the good work and I look forward to bugless beast on this thing

  11. @Josh, sounds like it could be caused by the version of busybox you need.

Find me V1.17.1 and I will remake the zip.

  12. hey peter...
i found a way around this.
    Boot the phone into recovery.
clear all user data then reboot when it boots. it keeps throwing up filesystem errors but keep pressing close and gradually work your way to privacy then factory reset. Wehn it resets. reinstall clockwork and reistall the image from the sd card. Im not sure if it was busybox or the "lag fix" that caused the crippling of the phone.
thanks for the help. and i will find that version of busybox for ya.

You are possibly the coolest man alive !

  15. Pete, will you be able to work on a Vibrant "flavor" of your ROM?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Also, BusyBox 1.18.1 is now available, which includes the stuff that was missing in 1.18.0, so you should be able to include it instead of 1.17.1 now.

  19. I've been looking into getting a Captivate, and this guide here has talked me into it. Now I can get the phone the way I want it, without all the crap from AT&T. Thank you very much sir! I'll let you know how it goes once I actually pick one up!

  20. This is awsome Pete, I love it. I am a noob and this saved me weeks of work and probably bricking my phone in the process. It did everything I'd been wanting to do to Captivate. Great Work! I hit your donate page too!
Question, will this have any affect on the Froyo update? Will this work with it? And can we still get it. Will you post a section on how to undo all of this so that we can get the Froyo update if it isn't gonna be compatable. Thanks.

  21. Thanks, Pete!!! Works great. Love every thing about this ROM. Can you add an SSH daemon that runs in the background for the next ROM?

I'm having visions of copying files back and forth to my phone without having to connect the cable...

  22. Worked great as far as rooting but the Wireless Tether app crashes everytime I *Press to start tethering*

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

  25. Hello.

I did this, everything seemed good, I tried to access the superuser permission it crashes. How can this be fixed?

    Thanks.

  26. When you say "Place on sdcard (the built in card, not the removable" how do you do this step?

  27. I just bought a captivate from ebay and I guess it had this bugless beast teaser already on it does this mean my phone is overclocked? Id rather it not be and I want to be able to get the froyo update whenever it gets released I dont know anything about rooting or hacking so I would rather just have a stock phone...

  28. hey Pete,
Anything in the works for the Fascinate??
    Please!!

  29. Pete I love bugless beast. How do I get the GPS update that att just sent out since it wont install on my rooted captivate.

Thanks for all your hard work man

  30. I'd love to try this tool but I need a way to easily get my phone back to normal (with AT&T bloatware, un-rooted, etc) if I need to go to AT&T with warranty. All I've heard are good things about this release.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Pete, I really enjoyed the Release The Beast. Since I've updated my Captivate to 2.2 I was wondering if you planned to release an update to RTB for FROYO. Thanks again for all you work, hope you're getting sufficient donations.
    Thanks again for your work.

  32. pete now that 2.2 is making the rounds, are u going to do the same great work for froyo? i have the rom but i don't want to lose the root and i'm a noob at this so i'm not sure how to root it using the shell..

    ReplyDelete
  33. I rooted with V0.2 does OTA still work once 2.2 is put out?

    ReplyDelete
  34. any way to undo ULB? What do you recommend? Or can I use rom mgr and put cognition over ulb?

    ReplyDelete
  35. if you want to unroot and update to froyo don't install this I haven't found a way to unroot and be able to update anybody else know how

    ReplyDelete
  36. Just use cognition to remove it. That's the only way that worked for me.
