More confusion about the FRG01B Droid OTA Update...

As many of you may have heard, the FRG01B OTA update for Droid was supposedly pulled/halted due to "conflicts with flash player". What has left some of us confused is why it has not been removed from Google's servers yet. Even more confusing is a file a man by the name of John Galt provided me with early this morning. He had installed my deodexed FRG22 located on my downloads page and received an OTA notification. Being curious as any rooted user would be, he pulled this file from the cache folder and sent it my way. What he had received OTA turned out to be a "complete", "master" FRG01B update...

By "complete" I mean that this update does not patch your current system files as most ota updates do, it completely wipes them and replaces them (the same way ROMs install). What makes this update a "master" file is its ability to update any OS running on your Droid to FRG01B. To simplify, it can update a Droid running 2.0, 2.0.1, or 2.1 to 2.2; rather than it only being able to update 2.1 to 2.2. After a few minutes of browsing around this file I found that it contained two update scripts. They both essentially do the same thing except for one is written in the amend language and the other in edify. I am not sure why the amend language script was included because every recovery used on the Droid has been able to execute edify script, which is the more recent and preferred language.

Athough this is a different FRG01B OTA update from what we have seen prior, they are all still identical from what I can tell. In that case there is no need to worry about waiting for me to root it as it is already available for download. All this being said, why would Verizon/Google/Moto put out another OTA update for FRG01B if it was rumored to be pulled and put on halt until the issues are resolved? It's getting very late so I plan on sleeping on the thought...

  3. Ok, so any idea what thoes of us who have the first FRG01b, non-rooted, should do? I still want to get to FRG22, rooted people seem to be able to get to it and say it's fast. I've tried 2 sites files, including here, and get a "sig verification failed" on both. Even d/l using the phone and get it the error............?

  4. What does "Odexed" and "Deodexed" mean?

  5. Is it possible that they're looking for a way to force everyone to an official release? Maybe they try to patch official releases but if they think your running something else (custom ROM) they'll try and push the complete update?

  7. I'm using this frg22 deo and have not gotten any ota notification. What I find odd is that frg01b is still on the servers, vzw put out the official build notice as frg01b,then changed it to frg22, but then supposedly halted all, now going back to frg01b. By the way, unstablespps.com sent out an email stating since google banned EasyRoot, he created an apk for it. So there ya go Pete. I tried it. Smooth as far as I can see.

  8. So those of us just running Bugless Beast V0.4.....Do we have to do anything or can we just continue on our merry way until you release V0.5?

I'd like to not have to start over.....

  11. So do I understand this correctly I can install this on a non rooted 2.1 and get 2.2 and root at Thea same time. Or can I install this over my BB "probably wont" and still keep root.

  12. John Galt? Someone loves Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged huh? ...If you've read Atlas Shrugged, you'd get why this story is even funnier.

HELP! I downloaded this file over my backed up BB v0.4 and now I cant do a soft boot to restore v0.4. I get an exclamation point when I try. Is this a matter of needing to downloading Clockwork Mod or have I basically screwed myself and have to now start over to re rooting my phone?

    Thanks,

  14. Hello Peter,

Thanks for providing such invaluable resources to the Android community.

I recently rooted my phone using the SP Recovery flash way and flashed in FRG22 rooted on top of ESE81 unrooted. Was I supposed to flash FRG01B first on top of ESE81 or are these odexed roms pretty much standalone? Your answers will be appreciated.

    Cheers!

  17. I'm sorry, and feeling a little stupid, why is this preferable over FRG01B that was posted on 8-3? Please excuse the thickness of my skull.

  20. I don't want to sound stupid but I need to ask before I do something that I will regret. I am currently running kernel version 2.6.29-omap1-bekit-0.8.3-5x1200SV Mod version cyanogenMod-5.0.5.4-Droid. I have clockworkmod recovery version 1.8.0.8. I want to get to the latest version of clockworkmod recovery (that is stable) and the current .4 BB version. I find very little help in the blogs about this situation and I don't want to make a mistake. If you could take the time to advise or simply point me to the advice: 1) how do I update clockworkmod recovery 2) Can I simply use the latest download of the .4 by transferring the .zip onto the sdcard and installing it using clockworkmod? Thanks for the time/clarification.

  21. Hell All,

First off, thank-you Pete for all of your development efforts, as well as the extra information you provide for us to chew on, which is one of the reasons all of us tinkers trust you.

It took me a bit of investigating to figure out how to enable flash on the 2.2 build, so I thought I would share this link. All I had to do was install the APK, and flash then worked with the FRG01B build posted by Pete on Aug 3.

The third post down at the following link provides a link to download the Flash 10.1 Beta 3 APK:

Sorry if this is not the appropriate place to post, but I thought it was pertinent to the subject.

  22. @Brad You can Update the CLockWorkMod Recovery flash directly from ROm Manager, Open ROm MAnager and at the Top there is "Flash ClockWorkMod Recovery" click over ther and will update u to the lastest version ok CLockWorMoc (2.5.0.1), but I personally got some problems with that version so I run the version 2.5.0.0 of CLockWorkMod.
To flash any other version of ClockWorkMod Recovery on ROm Manager go to the bottom of the menu and click "All ClockWokMod Recoveries" and select the version u want.
TO install BB0.4 just download it to ur sdcard and then installed from ROm Manager ("Install ROm From SD Card"), but u will need to wipe data and cache so u better make a backup using Titanium Backup.
    Hope that helps

  23. I'll wait for BB0.5 I think it will be better than the OTA rooted version. I hope Pete puts in even more goodies than what the OEM version has. Thank Pete.

  24. Question for Pete of whomever else can answer. Is this master build FRG01B better than the FRG22 build that Pete has posted? I am currently running FRG22, but if this is better then I will install it. Thanks everyone any feedback would be great.

  25. at first I was like WTF.. then I read the golden words "in that case there is no need to worry about waiting for me to root it as it is already available for download" and I was calmed again. thanks!

  26. So does this mean that Sprecovery or clockwork can't block the OTA?

    ReplyDelete
  27. What do you think of the possibility that Google/Big Red are trying to implement an "electronic fuse" in this update like the X was using (before it was rooted)? If a non-approved ROM (i.e. Bugless Beast or whatever flavor you use) is installed it will render the Droid inoperable until an approved ROM is installed. Just a thought from the ramblings of a knuckle dragging end user who certainly appreciates Pete's efforts.

  29. I'm confused, Is this rooted?

  30. Lol. Thanks guys. I just happened to get the file, thank Pete and all his hard work all this time with files, ROMs, and such for confirming what I thought.

@Mike - Yeah, it's why I have been using the moniker online for about 15 years now....

@marc - use the deodexed file this time and yu'll have root. Then you can run ROM Manager, grant root access, and then flash SPRecovery / ClockworkMod and then restore your old ROM back...

@Brad - If you have ROM Manager, that is how you flash Clockwork Mod Recovery.

@Sandman - define better. I can say this - FRG01B that I found and Pete confirmed is simply the build released out to the general public to bring All DROIDs into FroYo compliance. FRG22 is still considered a 'leaked' build (although I have my suspicions that it is, in fact, the final build that will get pushed out to our phones soon enough, hence the need for this All in one FRG01B update ROM), but since it requires you to have FRG01B on your phone, it makes sense that Moto / VZW push this FRG01B update out to all users, regardless of which pre-2.2 ROM they are on.

@Anonymous 8/10/10 4:56 AM - They can and *do* block it. However, they don't block the *notification* that comes to you in the OS.

  31. BTW - more users (including myself again) are getting this same file as an OTA update right now, as we speak. The time stamp on the .ZIP file is 11 Aug 12:53:56 on my phone, but all the hashes match up 100%.

Looks like VZW is adamant about getting everyone on FroYo - and that is only a good thing.

  35. I updated to FRG22 about a week ago, Im thinkin i might flash FRG01 and then update to FRG01B deo. I lost some apps that were paid Documents to GO and Cachemate pro. Im hoping this will give me back the ability to see/dw/use again.

  36. Just a few questions. I updated about two weeks ago with the leaked version from Android Central. Had a lot of bugs so I looked around found this blog and saw the FRG01B and flashed that. Having two problems still every day I lose some of my educational cd files I downloaded from my laptop and second my vignette camera apps stops working. I reboot with FRG01B and everything works for about a day then again stops. Any way to fix that. I have not received the official 2.2 download yet. Any suggestions? I am unrooted, I get a bit queasy thinking about doing that at this point maybe down the road.

  38. Anyone know where there are instructions on how to flash the Droid1 from VZW official FRG01b to FRG22 Odexed (or DeOdexed) using Peter's downloads?

    ReplyDelete
  39. First you need to root your phone once you root it install rom manager

  40. Strange, I recently had major problems with my Droid after months of flashing roms and CMRecovery without problems, the phone wouldn't boot or factory reset. I actually wiped the SD card completely clean after trying everything else. I have a new droid coming Monday. For the hell of it, I tried installing the FRG01 onto the memory card directly to the SD card from the computer and it actually started my droid back up! Good to know in case this happens in the future.

  42. any clue how to make my exchange server work with frg22? it worked fine until the ota update.

  43. @ Anonymous: I was using FRG22 & FRG22D (not sure what the difference is) and lost exchange support with both. I updated to Pete's latest FRG01B and everything's working as it should.

Although, I am receiving OTA update notifications still :(

  44. Pete,

I installed your FRG22 several weeks ago and did not get any FRG01B OTA updates. A few days ago I got an FRG22 OTA. When I rebooted the phone to get rid of the notification the update failed but the notification has not come back.

My question is; is there any difference between this latest OTA update and the one I have already installed?

  45. Peter,

Using FRG22D-Odexed, I lose Root Permissions. Many of the Root apps. I was using your FRG22Odexed and everything worked just fine. Now with FRG22D, Even Titanium Backup can't get Root.

    Any ideas?
    Thank you,
    Steve S
