Download: Gingerbread (Android 2.3.4) ROM Update GPA16

Exactly one month ago I released GPA15. This month, GPA16 will update your Droid to Android 2.3.4 as well as add Ad-hoc network and FLAC audio support. Other changes include bug fixes/code improvement, such as the data loss fix by CVPCS and a new kernel by me. To make things a bit easier, I have added all of the latest Google applications including Market and Google Chat with video.

For those of you who do not know, my GPA builds are a series of ROMs built to replicate what would have been an "official" update from Motorola. To the end user this simply means that this ROM will appear completely stock. What most do not realize is I have many tweaks and improvements "under the hood", making this ROM extremely fast yet completely stable. I have also added small features such as a reboot option and 180 degree rotation. Word on the streets is that there is a hidden feature available and only Droid-Life has the file to unlock it...

Changelog coming soon, school/work has me quite busy.

Notes:
  • If you are still on Bugless Beast, please install this upgrade!
  • If coming from a previous GPA build, wipe dalvik cache.
  • If coming from any other ROM wipe data/factory reset.
  • If you hear no sound when making a call, reboot once.
  • AutoOverclock.zip no longer works.
  • Camera shutter sound at boot is caused by new Google Talk with video.

  4. Stopped by to download a newer v3 kernel and to my surprise found a stable gpa16. Keep up the great work Pete.

  5. do I _really_ need to wipe data?

    ReplyDelete
  6. maybe answered my own question -- wiped cache only, all seems ok. will it bite me in the bottoms later? one can only hope not...

and thank you for your hard work. these ROMs are great.

  7. Get yourself Titanium Backup and stop worrying about wiping data.

I'm sorry if I'm a little short with that comment, But seriously after the 20th time doing it, you will be able to wipe and install everything in under an hour, while driving.

  8. I JUST updated to 2.3.3 half an hour ago. Oh well.. here goes.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Is there a difference between the kernel that is included and your v0.3 kernel?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Heck yeah, can't wait to download and install! Keep up the great work Pete!

  11. I heard that you can't watch videos from the marketplace if you have a rooted phone. Can we watch videos from the marketplace with this build by any chance? Or does it not even matter, rooted is rooted period?

  12. looking great so far, just can't figure out the surprise droid-life has.

  13. Ughh i was just settling with ur 7/10 GPA 16 build. But anyways great job! Ima flash this tommorow! And do i need to install that autooverclock.zip to get the CPU in the settings work? Im new to this.

  21. What have been everybody's impressions of battery life through the GPA releases?

    ReplyDelete
  22. Installed everything and works wonderfully with the 900MHz SV kernel (especially after buying a new battery; the life is excellent).

First boot up took quite some time though (five minutes about, honestly), so don't fret if your system seems to hang on the "red eye".

    ReplyDelete
  23. You're amazing Pete. Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  24. Swanky. You are so keeping me happy while I wait for the Bionic. Good job dude.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Just wondering if the latest kernels will work or are necessary in this build. I assume they are, but I'd rather ask and be sure.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Came here to check on beta builds, what a nice suprise.
Now, about that hidden feature.... http://www.droid-life.com/?s=GPA16&x=0&y=0 yields no results :(

    ReplyDelete
  27. Zombie art is not the surprise he is talking about! Beta testers should notice that the "CPU Settings" menu is no longer there. Pete said this would be optional.

It is ANY rooted device. Google lets you buy the movie but they wont let you watch it. It is a pain to try and return the video also.....

  29. Does installing this overwrite a previous install of one of your kernels? Do I have to install a v3 kernel again After installing gpa16?

    ReplyDelete
  30. The hidden file is here http://www.droid-life.com/2011/07/14/peter-alfonso-releases-gpa16-gb-2-3-4-for-the-droid-and-we-have-the-hidden-file/

  32. how does one install the hidden file in rom manager?

    ReplyDelete
  33. All the latest v3 kernels work with gpa16 and after you dwnld the cputoolkit.zip you flash it like you did gpa16. No wiping necessary.
PETE SO FAR IM LOVING THIS!
the CPU settings feature is rad

    ReplyDelete
  34. I'm dumb as a plank. How do I install this ? Rename to Update.zip and reboot ? I am rooted.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Is a separate kernel download required with GPA16 or is the latest included in ROM?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Great work Pete! Keep it up and take some time for yourself brotha, enjoy the donation!

    ReplyDelete
  37. Sigh... time to upgrade my BB 0.5 themed rom... Finally I will enjoy Gingerbread!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I'm really curious - How does this ROM compares to CM7.1RC (also based on Android 2.3.4)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Well done Pete! Super smooth and runs better at 800mhz than gpa15 did at 1ghz.

    ReplyDelete
  40. check that, i flashed from rom manager and wiped data and cache, and works flawlessly...

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh HELL yes! Peter, I'll be honest, even with all the nice features of CM and other roms, I gave up on dealing with the bullshhhhh and keep your battery saving, fast, and sleek-looking builds. As soon as I get money (just started a job up again finally) I'll donate to you, because these roms are the best of the best, and I thank you for making them. Cheers!

  51. One more time guys, how do I install this. Change to update.zip or do I need Clockwork or something else

    ReplyDelete
  52. So with the new CPU settings tool, do I still need to flash a kernel? I had the 1.2ghz SV kernel flashed....am I capped at 800mhz now?

    ReplyDelete
  53. Excellent and quick to update! Thanks Peter.

    ReplyDelete
  54. what governor do you like best for speed? Interactive or Performance?

    ReplyDelete
  55. I was not aware of the super long wait during the re-boot process and almost borked the whole thing but, finally got it going. Still haven't gotten the CPU trick installed.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Excellent job as always Peter. If google or Motorola don't hire you they are mad. I hope you continue your greatness with the bionic. It's one of the reasons I'm getting it

    ReplyDelete
  57. This is awesome! Peter, you are the man... still giving love to the OG Droid, and in the most stable way. My phone has never run better!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Awesome. Working great just as is. Fast and smooth. No issue to report.

    ReplyDelete
  59. How do I get a honeycomb theme for GPA16?

    ReplyDelete
  60. Where can we find the cputoolkit.zip that allows use of Pete's clock kernals?

    ReplyDelete
  61. To all who ask about flashing from this or that (the rom, hidden file, etc), prerequisites are: rooted droid, SD card in phone, ClockWorkMod recovery (or other recovery that can flash roms), charged battery, and about 5-15 mins of your time. It's not hard, google it, quit asking on here lol.

    ReplyDelete
  62. Cputoolkit.zip can be found on Droid Life via Google. I had to pull my battery to gain access to the new Market. Anyone buy/watch a movie yet to see if it works on a rooted Droid? GPA16 @ 1GHz is FAST! Thanks Peter...I'll be making another donation.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Working great so far updated from GPA14 no data wipe just cache Thank you Pete

    ReplyDelete
  64. Amazing! Thank you Thank you Thank you. Dropping off that donation

    ReplyDelete
  65. First time poster ... first time rom upgrade. THANK YOU! Took me a while to get it right but when I did ... WOW! The new OS is working great! So far ALL of hardware works perfectly! Thank you so much for all that you do! Just put GPA16 on a 1st gen Moto Droid, and I am loving it!

    ReplyDelete
  66. Working alot better than GPA15. Very nice!

    ReplyDelete
  67. A new build plus a fresh set of kernels plus a new boot logo equals a donation out of this world. All I can say is just keep being perfectionately awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Peter as usual awesome work. I have been rocking GPA15 for a while, I was waiting for GPA16 and now is here and kicking ass...

    ReplyDelete
  69. Just donated again! Keep up the great work!!!

    ReplyDelete
  70. Thank you Peter!

This ROM is exactly what my phone wants. :)

The one change I might request is the power control widget in the status bar. Other than that, this is the perfect ROM.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Awesome work man!

I originally installed this on top of GPA 15 but I had problems with heating/battery/lag. After a clean install everything works great. Seems faster than GPA 15 and I got 980 (@800mhz) on Quandrant.

This will hold me over until I can get my hands on a Bionic.

    Thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  72. Stupid question but I updated from Bugless Beast and now have no great settings, like especially noads. How do I block ads and stuff now? I miss those settings and am scared by the scary ads I have not had to deal with since I first flashed Petes roms.

    ReplyDelete
  73. please help ive downloaded gpa16 to cpu but have no idea how to rrot my droid what do i do now. it would be great for step by step instructions for us noobs

    ReplyDelete
  74. What Zhieson said-- and I had the same experience with installing GPA15 over 14. While it's possible to install in place (and evidently some people have had no problems), if you do run into reduced battery life or stability issues, a clean install should probably be an early troubleshooting step.

BTW, if anyone knows: is there any difference between flashing, say, an 800 MHz kernel and flashing a 1GHz or 1.25 GHz kernel and running it at 800 MHz in CPU settings (from the "Secret CPU Toolkit" at droid-life)?

It would be nice to have the extra speed easily available without reflashing, but I'm not sure if that results in fewer available speed slots when running with an 800MHz max.

(And thanks again to Peter for all his continued work!)

    ReplyDelete
  75. Peter, great work here! This has given my OG a new lease on life. If anyone reading this is totally new to Droid hacking as I was just a few hours ago just drop me an email and I'll get you started.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Just a heads up.....you can't set yuor music as a ringtone with the Google music thats included in this build. To do it....I extracted the music apk from gpa 14. Works great. After testing, I uninstalled google music, but you can leave both loaded on your phone without issue. You just need to choose the default, like with anything else.

Just wanted to post this for those who hate google music as much as I do.

  77. Hello,I,m looking into makeing my samsung intercept (virgin wireless)phone a wifi hotspot.I,m not very experienced with this tech stuff. Is it relatively easy. thanks, Mike

    ReplyDelete
  78. Great job! Using GPA16 in combination with V6 Supercharger has been working great for my OG Droid. This will keep me going until I can afford one of the newer phones.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Wow! Just tried the new miui. What a mess! I will never leave you again pete. Sticking to purely android this time. No adw, launcher pro, or Go SMS. Everything works great.

    ReplyDelete
  80. That CPU settings made it a lot better ^^

Tested the gtalk video chat and it works a lot better than Fring or Tango. Only thing I can't seem to figure out is I can start a video chat session with anyone that has a webcam but they cannot start one with me.

I guess this has to be the fact that the camera equipped on the droid is not for video chatting. But I was wondering if anyone found a way around this?

    Any help would be appreciated.

Other than that, Pete another fine release~ thanks for making my OG droid kick ass again <3

    ReplyDelete
  81. Great work as always... I was confident enough with this build to even upgrade my wife's OG from Froyo with GPA16, v0.3 LV 1GHz Kernel and the red moto logo and she loves how fast her phone flies now.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Pete, I just sent you another donation. You do a great service to the og community. I've been using GPA Roms since GPA10 with good to great results.

GPA16 is very stable on my og as long as I stay awy from the lv kernels. Currently using 2.6.32-medV-1.0GHz-ChevyNo1 and it has been running stable for several days.

Downloaded your CPU Toolkit but still prefer SetCPU due to its data displays.

I'm also running V6 SuperCharger but several of the GPA16 files are read-only so I cannot implement 99SuperCharger on reboot. As a result the levels often revert on reboot. However, your GPA16 levels are a great improvement over the previous versions.

Upgrading the Motorola logo appears to be more complicated than I have time for. Not sure how to work with open code.

I really appreciate your GPA series. You make the og one of the most up-to-date phones available. Why buy a new one? Thank you Pete!

  83. My Droid is currently running android 2.2.2 and this is my first time doing anything like this. Do I need to root my phone or what do I do?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Peter -- I notice that the kernel bundled with GPA16 was built on July 8 (and tops out at 800 MHz). Is there any downside to using one of your other 0.3 kernels? Or should we wait for a new batch?

    ReplyDelete
  85. Does anyone know if GPA16 allows you to connect to an Ad-hoc wifi network?

    ReplyDelete
  86. I should add the rest of the build is awesome. Plus there is a workaround for the Music issue using an app called autostarts. :)

    ReplyDelete
  87. thanks again Pete for another AWESOME update

    ReplyDelete
  88. Very nice work as usual Peter.

Just a question but how would you get DSP manager working, or is there an alternative?

    ReplyDelete
  89. Thanks Peter updating now after I run a few benchmarks to see how much my speed changes before/after the new build.

    ReplyDelete
  90. Excellent. I'd been skeptical about my OG D1's ability to run GB to my satisfaction, but this is as clean and nice as the snappiest FroYo build I've run. Thanks very much.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Pete I have been following u for a while now. This version is unbelievably amazing! I still continue to rock my OG Droid with pride thanks to you and don't plan on upgrading at all! I did get the Xoom and when I updated OG Droid to your GPA 16 it had alot of the same feel! You are incredible man keep up the awesome work you do. And MANY THANKS!!!

    ReplyDelete
  92. I've tried a couple of other Roms and yours is the best. The one I installed yesterday really screws up my phone, I'm going to stick with yours from now on.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Hey Pete,
Great work! No matter what ROMs I try, I always come back to yours eventually.

    ReplyDelete
  94. Just in case anyone else is wonder, I have answered my own question. Yes it does support Ad-Hoc wifi connections. I didn't see it anywhere in the post or in the changelog.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Pete, I am astounded. I tried GPA 15 for a bit and went over to Steel Droid. Now I am back on GPA 16... ran quadrant standard and scored a little over 900 and have had no issue so far. Running wireless tethering to my Asus Transformer and really getting a lot out of this build. Thanks for your work sir. I think I'm gonna sit tight on this until I get my Bionic in November.

    ReplyDelete
  96. thanks brother, you are simply the best!!!

    ReplyDelete
  97. I'm pretty new to this but I feel pretty good about holding on to my OG Droid now. Does anyone know what carriers I can get it on?

    ReplyDelete
  98. Came from a buggy Liquid and so far I am loving everything about this. Kudos, Pete! P.S. Forgot to wipe data/factory reset but so far so good.

    ReplyDelete
  99. I see that this ROM has the TV animation when turning the screen off, but not when turning the screen on. Is there some way to enable this? I know it's possible on other custom ROMs, but I can't figure out how on this one. On a side note, this ROM has practically doubled my battery life! I'll definitely be sticking with Peter's ROMs from now on!

    ReplyDelete
  100. Hey Pete, I was hoping you would validate whether the news over at DroidForums is correct, in that you released a functioning port of 2.3.5. I downloaded the file that was linked in the original post, but I was surprised to see that you hadn't mentioned anything about it here yet.

    ReplyDelete
  101. Any idea when we will be able to overclock this version? Love GPA 16 bigtime! Just move to 2.3.5 thanks to Droid Life. Works great. Like having a new phone! Anxiously waiting to overclock!

    ReplyDelete
  102. Hello, I was wondering about one thing before I put this on, does gps and navigation still work?

    ReplyDelete
  103. To Tré - I agree! It's there but no formal commentary from Peter. What's up? I know you're busy Peter but drop us a comment both here and DroidForums, please....

To BJTEMP - You can already overclock by flashing the cputoolkit.zip tool by doing a search and getting instructions. I also flashed one of Peter's 1.25GHz kernals and my D1 is running well!

To jhwblender - GPS and Nav works great! I still run an older version (4.4.0) because the newer version works but has too many features for the D1's processor to manage properly IMHO.

    ReplyDelete
  104. This was my first experience with flashing a new rom to my phone and I love it. Thanks so much for helping us Droid 1 users have something to make us proud of our aging phones.

    ReplyDelete
  105. @Pastor Aaron,

Where did you get the wireless tether you used? I just bought an Acer Iconia I'd love to tether.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Dear Peter,

I tried to update my A853 to GPA 15 and 16, but the following error message appeared:

    E: error in /sdcard/Openrecovery/updates/GPA16DE0DEXED.zip

Can anyone tell me where I had gone wrong? I'm running on CM7 (0614)

    ReplyDelete
  107. http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/detail?name=wireless_tether_2_0_7.apk

Brenth, be sure to enable the Bluetooth Tether in the the app. Android doesn't support adhoc WiFi yet. Well, unless you have a kernel that does i guess. But on GPA16 you'll need to use Bluetooth. I use it with my transformer.

    ReplyDelete
  108. HOW TO INSTALL, please describe with details. Even if I can't root on phone. Please write tutorial for this issue from first step. thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Oh man! Just upgraded from GPA12 and this is brilliant. The 3G just snaps back on after a call.
Pete, I just bought you BEER(s) for this and all your other work that I have used. Drink UP!
