Download: Gingerbread Keyboard
Well, I think I've waited long enough to post this now. About a week ago I blessed Droid-Life with an exclusive; the Gingerbread keyboard ported to work on Froyo by me. Now I'm posting it here on my site just in case you missed out. This is only for rooted phones although I did make it an "installable" package. It will only work on rooted devices because you must have the associated .lib file installed as well. Although this keyboard is intended to be used on Gingerbread, porting it to Froyo did not break any of the new features. This is THE nicest keyboard I have ever used and has many new features that you can read about on android.com
Download link and installation instructions after the jump:
Prerequisites:
1. Android 2.2 (Froyo)
2. Latest Voice Search App (Download in Market)
3. Rooted Device
Installation:
0. Make A Backup!!!!
1. Download GingerBreadLatinIME.zip
2. Place on sdcard (rename to update.zip if using SPRecovery)
3. Reboot into recovery mode
4. Choose and install GingerBreadLatinIME.zip (do not wipe data or cache)
5. Reboot
*Note* – Droid X users:
In Clockwork, go to mounts and storage > mount system and then back to install .zip from sd card
For those with "small keyboad" after installing; use the free LCD Density app from the market to set the density to 300, then reboot, set to 260, reboot, set to 240.

Great work Peter! Just tried it out, and so far I like it! Seems like the keys are more responsive to my fast typing that with the previous stock one! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteAny differences between this and the version you posted a few days ago? Thanks
ReplyDelete@Andres, no they are the same
ReplyDeleteThanks again for this, Pete! Great to use when Swype hiccups!
ReplyDeleteThanks a lot Petes! Also would it be possible if you could provide a zip with the stock 2.2 keyboard? It's not really necessary but it would be appreciated :)
ReplyDeleteNice, but not nice enough
ReplyDeleteI would like to have a good t9 keyboard
When you disable 'voice input key' or put it on 'symbols keyboard' it's replaced by a key with a comma on it. What is the point of this key if a comma is already on the top row? Is it to aid speed typing? I would prefer a bigger space bar as I often end up hitting the comma or full stop when trying to type fast.
ReplyDeleteAlso the vibrate on keypress doesn't work on my Galaxy S Fryo XXJPM.
Thanks
JW
Nice its better than the old One lot more responsive I think
ReplyDeleteIs there anyway to get more input languages? It looks nice and I wish I could use it in french...
ReplyDeleteWent great for me so far. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks Pete. Works beautifully on my Motorola Droid.
ReplyDeleteit is working for me, but not nearly as good as Smart keyboard pro :/
ReplyDeleteI think for some reason my D1 just hates the android Keyboard. The stock android keyboard on my Fascinate works like 1000 times better
Is auto correct working in this version?
ReplyDeleteI've installed this one on a Nexus One with CM6.1. I can't get multi touch working, is there a trick?
ReplyDeleteDoes this have spelling correction module to it?
ReplyDeleteAuto correct and spelling works on my device (Droid).
ReplyDeleteNo trick for the multitouch that I know of.
I am a newbie. Anyone can help what this means:
ReplyDeleteReboot into recovery mode
What do I need to do?
@Ong
ReplyDeleteHotKeys: (created by Pete)
-Recovery (hold power & x button)
-Shutdown (hold power & s button)
-Reboot (hold power & r button)
-Testing Menu (hold left alt & menu button)
Does the keyboard update do anything for the browser? (The only reason I ask is because my browser magically looks a hundred times better! Maybe a coincidence?)
ReplyDeleteAwesome!
ReplyDeleteHoping you'll find some time to explain some things to a noob. I Edited the apk, added new res/xml-mk and res/values-mk but it still doesn't show up in the input language list. All I want is to add a new keyboard layot, where does it read the languages list??
Hope I make sense, I'm not trying to add a new dictionary, just simply add a new input language.
Thanks
Hey Peter thanks for the port, this will be good enough until Cyanogen and co. port Gingerbread to the HTC Slide. Just one issue though I can't install it, tried with ROM Manager and it gives an error "Status 0". So.... am I doing this right?
ReplyDeleteworked on my droid 1
ReplyDeleterom manager free: reboot into recovery mode: select install from .zip on sdcard: select download: select file name: install (see signature): reboot: enjoy
Can anyone provide "install for dummies" instructions? I have an N1.
ReplyDeleteThanks
I installed it, but where is it? How do I select it and from where?
ReplyDeleteHi Pete. Many thanks, works great on my Droid. I see that Russian layout already present in the res/... But I can't find how to set Russian layout in preferences.
ReplyDeleteThe keyboard doesn't seem to do the free-select that is featured in 2.3, I was expecting to see an arrow show up when clicking on a word that I typed.
ReplyDeleteNow working very well indeed
ReplyDeleteI'm missing a step and can't get it loaded. Downloaded on my desktop computer, then transferred to SD via USB cable. Placed file on card. Renamed it to update.zip. Reboot into recovery. Selected: apply sdcard:update.zip Then I get an error message
ReplyDeleteE:failed to open /sdcardupdate.zip (no such file or directory)
E:signature verification failed
Installation aborted.
Any suggestions? Did I rename it right?
Anonymous - you need to disable Signature Verification. It may be in the Other menu depending on your recovery version.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the keyboard Peter, it works great on my HTC Desire (GSM)
Hi David, I had the same problem as Anonymous above. What "Other" menu were you referring to? Thanks.
