Are You Prepared?

Bugless Beast V0.5 is making progress but not quite ready for release to the masses. On a lighter note, you should start preparing now. I have created a tool that will backup a few of the more important databases found on your Droid. Once you run this tool the following will be backed up to your sdcard in a directory titled "backuptool": System Settings, Browser Bookmarks, Call Logs, SMS/MMS, User Dictionary, and Market Downloads List. Please note, this tool does not back up your apps.

So what good is backing up these files if there is no way to restore them? Good question...Once you install V0.5 my ROM will automatically check if these files exist on the sdcard; if they do exist, these files will automatically be restored!

This is a great option for those of us who choose to wipe data/factory reset but hate the hassle of losing all your important settings.

Did I mention this can be used on any ROM? Please don't hesitate to give Bugless Beast a try.

Instructions for use:
1. Download backuptoolv1.zip
2. Install it the same way you would install a kernel (do not wipe!)
3. Open a terminal and run "backup" (may need to type "su" first)
* Your settings should now be in the "backuptool" folder on your sdcard*

Note:
After installing, you may also run "backup" via the Script Helper found in the Bugless Beast Toolkit App by Mr. Blippy.

  2. Cool, but is there is difference between this and titanium backup ?

  3. Wow and I just switched to cyanogen mod because of battery life and lost my data again ah.

  4. I would love to have .5 on my baby this weekend.

  5. Sweet, looking forward to it... especially now that a sound workaround has been found:

    http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=737111

Hopefully google will fix the sound issue soon... I'd be surprised if Verizon pushed an update with crappy sound.

  6. Hopefully this update will fix my random physical keyboard problems. Strange "double" presses from the P key, Backspace, and others sporadically. It's been there since .3 I think.

  7. Asher, sounds like you need a new Droid, I never touched the keylayout files.

  8. Does this tool require bb .4, or could we use it if we wanted to migrate from another rom as well?

    ReplyDelete
  9. So I'm assuming there will be a restore script added into the 0.5 toolkit? Will the restore require a reboot?

    ReplyDelete
  10. Does this backup your google account info? If not could it? It would be awesome if we could do a wipe and not have to re setup the google account.

  11. Hey...just installed backup tool, and ran it...
    and just noticed 2 things:

    1. It looks like it wants to blow away any previous copy of the backuptool directory? (This would be a very good thing to call out if it is only storing 1 copy)

    2. the directory structure is:
/sdcard/backuptool/files/data/data/{BLAH}. Did you really mean to have the ~/data/data/~ in there?

    Just being nosey/curious!!

    Keep up the good work...

    --Peter (no, not that one...)

  12. Awesome! Can't wait for 0.5!

    ReplyDelete
  13. @Peter McKay,
    1. The original is blown away so that the settings you back up are always the most recent ones available.
    2. Yes, that is how they are stored in the data partition of the device.

    @Anonymous,
I believe it does but I have not ran enough test on it to be sure :)

    @Anonymous,
Yes there will be a restore script although the process will be automatic upon install of my next ROM.

  14. This idea is awesome! What other tricks do you have up your sleeve for v0.5?

  17. Do you take suggestions for upcoming releases?

    ReplyDelete
  18. The Beast stands well enough as it is. Although if I had one suggestion, it would be the Cyanogen 1.5 style lock screen that let you pull down the notification bar.

  19. I rooted 2 weeks ago and have flashed multiple ROM's... ALL were buggy and slow and i was severely regretting my decision to leave stock... then i tried the BEAST and I have to say it is truly a piece of work. No glitches so far and incredibly fast right off the bat. It is cliche', but it's like having a new phone. Thank you!

The only issue that i have so far is wifi that doesn't work, and from the forums it seems like this is a common FROYO issue across ROM's. Any suggestions?

    Looking forward to V0.5!

  20. Installed but I'm getting errors after typing backup in terminal.

    Removing old backup "none found"
Error: failed to change file mode: /sdcard/backuptool
    Error: could not create directory

    Something along these lines.

;) keep up the hard work, I probably did something wrong.

  23. The backup script worked awesome for my user dictionary and browser settings but my call logs and sms/mms didn't seem to be backed up :\

    ReplyDelete
  24. Pete, is this going to be based on FRG01 or whatever the latest kernel was?

    ReplyDelete
  25. Hi Peter... I just rooted my Moto Droid for first time last night and installed BB4... YOU ARE AWESOME!!!!! The speed upgrade is very noticeable. So far everything seems to work great except for one thing. On the battery icon, it always show about 10% more than what shows in spare parts or about phone. Any idea why? By the way the percentage in the icon itself is sweet.

    Thanks
    Jim

  26. Problem solved, I thought bbv.4 had automatic su for some reason. But typing in su first allowed the backup to work perfect.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Is there any to change the vibrate/sound settings. I hate how I have to manually turn off vibrate in froyo. I cant use the rocker keys. These settings just make me mad.

    ReplyDelete
  28. awesome backup tool...will donate in the near future but recently was fired!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. Is there any way we could get reboot and reboot to recovery in the power menu for 0.5?

    ReplyDelete
  30. Hi Pete. Does, the official release of 2.2 for the Droid coming next week change anything that you are doing?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Thanks Pete for yet another awesome tool

    ReplyDelete
  32. Pete, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE could you make the 270 screen rotation optional in 0.5. It's driving me crazy! I really liked just having the two-way screen rotation. I've been a huge fan of BB btw. I've tried switching to other ROMs but yours is the best by far! Love your work

    ReplyDelete
  33. I'd be grateful when this goes out... my alarm clock in G01B is buggy and doesnt work... almost missed work and lost ma job.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Pete, are you going to be porting themes over for this like you did with the 2.1 based Bugless Beasts? It seems like all the ones that you did were more complete than the ones I see every where else right now. Also, if you do plan on porting some themes over, please port NexTang

  35. Posted on Droid forum but wanted to be sure you see it :)
    1) Can you be sure the kernel includes a fix for the database leak in com.noshufou.android.su - this is definitely an issue in bb 0.4
some more detail on this: at
    Issue 1512 - cyanogenmod - Superuser database leak - http://code.google.com/p/cyanogenmod/issues/detail?id=1512

    2) Also, could you ensure the kernel included with bb has requisite netfilter options for wireless tether?

    more information on this at
    Issue 427 - android-wifi-tether - Issues connecting use Droid (BuglessBeast 0.4 Froyo) - http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/issues/detail?id=427&can=1&q=bugless
    Summary:
bb included kernel was configured and compiled without all of the necessary netfilter options.

Need to make sure that the kernel configuration includes both CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_MATCH_MAC=y
    and
    CONFIG_NETFILTER_XT_MATCH_MULTIPORT=y

    Thanks!!

  36. PETE PLEASE MAKE STOCK BROWSER FULL SCREEN IN NEXT ROM

    :)

It would be awesome to have the option. I only use Cyanogen because of that option.

  37. Wifi Adhoc Support Please!!!

  38. I love the suggestion of a full screen browser. I am working on modding the browser.apk as much as I can. New features, bug fixes, and themed.

I am not sure how to make the browser full screen, but I will find it!

Its not ready for release yet, but once I get an RC down, I will give PeterAlfonso a buzz, and see if he wants to include it in his ROMs. I only use Bugless Beast, so its guaranteed to work on his ROMs.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Thanks for all of or hard work Pete. I am very happy with BB v0.4 so take you time on the v0.5 revision so its up to. Your normal standard release. There's a reason why the original name of Petes ROMs 'Bugless Beast,. It's the word 'Bugless'. Keep up the standard Pete!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Hey Pete. So since I am running a different ROM, you mentioned I could use this tool with any of them.
How do I restore the files with another ROM?
Thanks for all of your hard work. As always :-)

  41. what do u mean when u say
"Open a terminal and run "backup" (may need to type "su" first)"

  42. @asher and pete
My physical keyboard was doing much of the same things as asher's. I was using bb v0.4. So then I flashed pete's new frg01b deodexed version and there were no more problems with my physical keyboard. I'm not saying you messed with anything dealing with the keyboard pete...but I found it odd to just fix itself when I switched roms. Just wanted to let you know. Thanks for your hard work! :)

  45. Hey Pete I have been waiting patiently for your upgrade...keep doing good work and they will come. Don't forget about us Droid 1 users who can't afford an X.

  46. how do I know that the back up worked. It says it did, but I don't see anything in the file.
Thanks and Pete you are the man.

  47. the things I would like to see is the 3D cube app drawer and the option for more screens. Minor things I know, but just what I like.

  49. Pete-
Quick question. does this restore the desktop icon layout?
    - Brian

    ReplyDelete
  50. @Damon if you download LauncherPro you can have all of those options. You can get it on the Market or there are a few modified ones in the themes section that work with BB .4

    ReplyDelete
  51. Pete, in .5, could you include CPU temp reading the stock kernal. I trust yours above others + you include all that I've wanted so far :D. Thanks.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Pete you need a tester and im your man b3s7h4x3r3va@gmail.com

  53. Are you going to use the same 800MHz kernel for 0.5? OR is it going to give the option to go faster with no random reboots or other issues? Whatever kernel I use i always go back to your OEM kernel in BB-0.4 it is by far the most stable. Thank you Pete....

    ReplyDelete
  54. I have tried EVERY rom out there and nothing has been more stable or reliable that BB 0.4. Bar none, the best rom available. Is BB 0.5 going to use the FRG22 files now that it's been made official by Verizon? Keep up the good work Pete.

    ReplyDelete
  55. So I tried using the backup tool, I installed it like a kernel and the backup folder now exists on my sd root but my terminal emulator keeps saying permission denied with both "backup" and "subackup". I'm running Sapphire 1.0.0 till BB v.05 is out.

    ReplyDelete
  56. It look like the backup tool only backs up vending data? So any apps I install via /sdcard won't be backed up?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Pulease release it. I'm sorry but you have a new one for Evo every two seconds and I'm about ready to sell my DROID for an Incredible and root that and head over to XDA to play around. Please release!

    ReplyDelete
  58. Could some tell exactly how to install this zip?
Open a terminal? No Clue. Not sure about the rest of it neither. Sounds like a real useful app if I can get it on the phone
    Running bb.4
    Moto Droid Froyo 2.2
    Thanks to all

  59. @ George. Go to start, click it, type cmd, press enter. I'm not sure if you have Android SDK installed but if you do, (this is how mine is set up) type cd AndroidSDK\android-sdk-windows\tools [enter] adb shell [enter] if the # comes up, your good, if not, read the directions on installing the android sdk and ask someone.

  61. anyone having a problem the toolkit?
It says there is an update available but it never shuts off and updates.

    ReplyDelete
  62. The tool was not working for me even though it is on the root of my sd card. The folder is dated the day I installed it but there are files inside the folder that are dated older. Did the tool kit take over any pre-existing backup that may have been on my phone?

    ReplyDelete
  63. @Peter alfonso
Is there any idea yet as to when 0.5 is coming. I can't say how many times I've checked the site in recent days to see if its out yet. Its a slow torturous death and only 0.5 can save me

    ReplyDelete
  64. Hey Pete. I am still prepared.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Ok. Ok. Point taken!! Lol! PayPal has been fed. :) Just given you a hard time. Keep being awesome. And I'm happy to donate. I too have felt the wrath of being a counterman. ASE and on my way up. I'm hungry for V5 my man!

    ReplyDelete
  66. this always happens, pete releases a ROM thats amazing, bar none, except for a few annoyances, other developers release fixes or upgrades within a week, then i switch to theirs, for example FIX THE ORIENTATION TRIGGER DURING A CALL

    ReplyDelete
  67. Umm... Pete? 3 weeks later... still making progress?

    ReplyDelete
  68. Question....Should I have V1.1 installed or can I just install V0.4 ?
If I have V0.4 installed, can i install V1.1 over it if need be?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Starting to think pete is teasing us like a 2doller stripper

    ReplyDelete
  70. I have 5 bucks with your name on it on getting us our new and improved version!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Pete, pete, pete....when is v0.6 coming? Wah, waaah, I want you to make me cool stuff for free! And I want it now! I gave you $1.50, what more could you possibly want? Waaaaahhhh!!

Sorry...I was feeling a little left out. I just had to poke you like the rest of the whiney lemmings...

He'll release it when it's ready and not a moment later....so, STFU.
    Thank You.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Pete, will .5 block certain websites like your other releases or will you be able to give users the ability to whitelist sites at their discretion?

    ReplyDelete
  73. Pete, is 0.5 going to have the goodies that the D2 froyo has? Huge difference from FRG22. Please give an option to stay with the regular froyo messaging because I hate the "bubble" style. Can you please include tools for configuration of status bar and home screen? Reboot in recovery on power button too will be real nice. The 2.2 OS kills the launcher when it needs memory, can you make it stop doing this "white list" it. Launcher redraws suck. This is probably the biggest thing I can think of. Thanks for everything Pete!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  74. When will the BBv0.5 be ready?....its been a while since it was mentioned, but still havent heard anything....figured i would ask?

All kidding a side.. Peter, good job dude...

  76. Is BBv0.5 or 06 ready? Can you please do the boot into recovery from the power button too please? Great Job Pete.
