GPA17 Beta Testing Now Live

As you may have heard the other day on Droid-Life, my latest nightlies for GPA17 are up for testing! These will update your Droid to Android 2.3.5 and update the kernel to 2.6.32.43. Changes from Android 2.3.4 to Android 2.3.5 are mostly bug fixes, if interested you can see these on my github.

As for the kernel, well I have had it in my mind to try to update it for a while but always thought it would fail miserably. I was pretty stressed out today after class so I needed something to work on to get my mind off things. A few hours later I am presenting you with the most advanced Droid kernel to date in my GPA17 nightly build. I say the most advance because this kernel is newer than any other by 34 subversions! Once I release my V0.4 kernels, flashing anything else will simply be a downgrade.

EDIT: After fixing an sdcard bug another bug appeared, this time causing random reboots upon selecting airplane mode. I am reverting to the old kernel until I have more time to look into fixing this issue.

If you do not already have the link to my beta folder bookmarked, here it is again:

  3. Awesome work! I am looking forward to a build that will include overclock with low voltage like your 0.3.

  4. So this release of GPA17 includes the "most advanced kernel"? I just installed GPA16 and love it. You really made me love my Droid 1 again...now I can hold out another 6 months for my upgrade. Thanks for your awesome work!

  5. Plan to post the .4s as standalone installables? I'm really liking the new PE, but your kernels are the gold standard.

  7. Pete, Well Done! This may have finally resolved what ever was causing home screen lag on my particular configuration. I'll know by tomorrow. But, so far the lag is gone. It look like I too will be able to wait at least another 6 months for the next generation devices.

Low level question. Any cause of being able to swap out the battery without the phone going dead? That may be a hardware charging circuit contraint and not possible but that's always bother me about the phone.

  8. Pete,

Thanks for all your hard work. If it wasn't for you, I would have wasted money on upgrading to a sub-standard phone a long time ago. Thanks to your updates, my OG Droid has been a pleasure to use.

I hope you upgrade to the Bionic, as is my plan, if they ever decide to release it, and continue your work there.

  9. Hey Pete, do we have to wipe data before installing this? Thanks!

  10. Pete,

Just flashed this, and was wondering if I should just stick with the new built-in kernel? I would like to overclock past 800MHz, but don't want to break anything!

When you mentioned the v0.4 kernel release, would that one be based on the kernel that is in GPA17?

    Thanks!

  11. One other question - is it "safe" to restore apps with Titanium Backup? (Meaning no system settings - just apps with their supporting backed up data)?

    Thanks again,
    Jeff

  12. Awesome, my droid is acting fast again. For some reason it was acting very slow on GPA16 with 1Ghz kernel. It's a lot faster now.

    ReplyDelete
  13. This ROM runs faster at 800Mhz than GPA16 at 1300Mhz. Is there any way that you can make just the kernel available at the different speeds that you had a couple kernels ago?

    ReplyDelete
  14. As others have mentioned, this ROM is FAST. GPA16 was not anywhere near as fast even with a LV 1300Mhz kernel installed. Pete, apparently your new kernel is amazing! My Droid is running better than EVER. Keep it up!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Yep. I was running GPA16 at 1ghz and it was doing pretty good. But now I'm running this GPA17 beta at 800mhz and it is noticeably faster and smoother. Great work! :)

  16. This rom doesn't even feel like a Beta. It's absolutely amazing! My Droid is flying and the memory optimization is excellent! Runs smoother than it ever has before. Thanks Pete! Astounding work :) The only thing I get rather frustrated with, not that you're capable of amending it, is the new Market. I had a hell of a time trying to install apps due to the "insufficient memory" bug which refused to go away despite over 170mb of free memory and rebooting countless times. I was lucky enough to get the Android Terminal on it so that I could install TiBU manually although it's still a pain in the ass. I tried installing previous versions of the Market but I kept getting force closes so I gave up on that. Aside from that one annoyance I'm in love with GPA 17. Thanks again!

    ReplyDelete
  17. I had the same issue with the Market. Clearing the Market and dalvik caches fixed it for me.

  18. Wow, my Droid has never been so smooth and snappy. Thanks a million!

  19. Been running for a few days now...it great! Thanks & I've thrown a little cash your way to show it :)

  20. I agree with everyone here. I was running GPA 16 and noticed that it was slower than GPA 15. It was almost as if GPA 16 was eating memory because I started uninstalling apps and my phone became usable again. So far, I have not had a single problem at GPA 17 is fast! Airplane mode be damned, I never use it anyway.

  21. Pete,

GPA17 is AWESOME as a beta! Can't wait for the final. Was waiting for the Bionic to release to upgrade performance. No need now! I am very new to rooting and you have made it an absolute breeze. My OG Droid will live on! Thank you, thank you, thank you!

    ReplyDelete
  22. Definitely doesn't feel like a beta Pete. Running really smooth and I updated straight from 16. This actually feels much smoother. Good job with the nightlies, keep it up. If moto wasn't so money concerned they should hire you :P

  23. My boss just got a Droid 3... My poor old OG droid is keeping up with it pretty well. =D Keep up the good work!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hi Pete, Love all your roms, would like to know if you can enable 3g internet calling on your next build. Thanks for all your work.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Really smooth ROM...in fact, one of the best that I have used over the last 2 years. One question : tethering to Xoom - is the only option Bluetooth? Would prefer to use normal wifi tethering instead so I have a broader option for multiple devices....advice?

    ReplyDelete
  26. Oh my god this newest update is so smooth its barry white smooth. I can't wait till u finish the rom not that it needs anymore work.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Getting better! the 8/7 update is much faster on my phone. I'm running the Honeycomb launcher, and it was lagging really bad on the 8/2 update. It's much better now. Like some others I would also like to OC higher than 800. I usually would run either you LV1100 or SV1300. Any way you could encorporate those, or make them available seporately?

    ReplyDelete
  28. Awesome work Pete! Thanks for your clean work as usual!

  30. Some change since 07/08/11 version?

  31. Wow, Pete, 8/8 nightlie makes 3G connection come back SUPER fast after making a phone call. I've not lost 3G randomly like on GPA16 (not as bad as GPA15 was though). You are doing wonders for my old Droid! No new phones in the works in the near future thanks to your awesome work! No other ROMs or kernels compare. You are truly in a league of your own.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Call me crazy but after installing this build my battery life is very much improved! Pete, this is great! Beer money coming soon. Your builds since BB v04 have made me love my OG droid more and more by the minute!

    ReplyDelete
  33. Why not let us set cpu above 800? If you're going to let us overclock, why not allow 1GHz or above?

    ReplyDelete
  34. OK so for a while I loved your early GPA builds but found froyo to work better on my phone. I wanted to stay with GPA but couldn't. Now, with GPA 17, I can truly say my phone runs the best. I am a believer Pete. Thanks for all the hard work. Donation coming your way.

    ReplyDelete
  35. screw it...i've never run any of the nightlies, but after seeing ppl's reviews on it, i can't bear waiting anymore!

    ReplyDelete
  36. This works great. Noticeably faster than GPA16 for my phone.

    ReplyDelete
  37. This is a solid build. Can't wait to try it with the new kernel. Snappy performance even at 800mhz. Even my touch-and-go wifi at work (PEAP/MSCHAPV2) works well on this build. I haven't had that working 100% since Bugless Beast (and that was by replacing a few binaries with 2.1 binaries). Thanks Pete! Book money coming shortly!

  38. quick noobie question. I successfully made a backup with Rom Manager, then successfully updated to 2.3.5. I now went back to the original (backup.) Is there a program that I can backup all my apps, contacts, and text messages so I can restore them all in the new ROM? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  39. Running the 8/8 version w/ cputoolkit & 1.1GHz IV kernal. So far, a definite improvement over GPA16.

    ReplyDelete
  40. When installing nightlies, do you have to do a full factory/data wipe each time, or can you just install over the previous rom?

    ReplyDelete
  41. ECS- use Titanium Backup to restore your apps and texts, but your contacts should be backed up to your Google acct. be warned that sometimes Pete recommends that you not restore apps with Titanium sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Installing over previous build without wiping data here and no issues.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Noticed all betas appperantly removed from posted beta link, less the 8/8/11 release.

It appears that most current (for Droid) is here: http://wonderly.com/bb/DROID/ROM/GINGERBREAD/

    Does this seem correct?

    ReplyDelete
  44. Correct, the beta directory has moved.

    ReplyDelete
  45. It appears that both the original and the second beta directory site are down. Btw, the 8/8 build is sweet without any other tweaks.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Is there a change log for your beta releases?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Running the 8/14 version @ 1GHz. No issues, very little to no lag between apps and launcher.
    :-)

    ReplyDelete
  48. Go to settings/about phone/android version and click three times fast on android version:-)

    ReplyDelete
  49. This man is a genius. 8/14 version at 1GHz runs smoothly. Anyone know how the battery life is on this setting?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Pete, thanks for adding the 1Ghz option under CPU settings in 8/14 nightly! I really like the new kernel and the old kernel breaks SMS if used with GPA17. Spence, battery life is slightly less than at 800mhz, but still better than ever.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Hi, do you recommend to update to the last version (08-17-11)? i have installed 08-07-11 version. regards!

    ReplyDelete
  52. The 8/8 nightly was good, 8/14 was better due to the 1GHz kernel and the 8/17 is superb. These have been the first or your work that run on my og without having to switch to an SV kernel. Thank you for all your hard work Pete. You Rock!

    ReplyDelete
  53. can you get theme chooser on this?

    ReplyDelete
  54. do you have wipe data/factory reset to go from 8/8 to 8/17. or just flash the new one. 8/8 works well thank you

    ReplyDelete
  55. no wipe or factory rest necessary. Backup and wipe cache only has worked well for me.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Great work Peter!

would it be possible to include tun.ko in your releases?

    Thanks

    ReplyDelete
  57. Hey, Pete, will you make a new bugless beast?

    ReplyDelete
  58. I'm assumming that this isn't newer than the GRJ90 build....considering that build is rockin 2.3.6 , can anyone verify?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Please Please support Arabic text,,, i am willing to donate,,

    ReplyDelete
  60. GPA17 is running GRJ90. You're probably thinking of market version 2.3.6, which is run under android 2.3.5. I could be wrong though.

  61. I just rooted my phone with clockword and I am having trouble getting peters latest build on my phone in order to flash. I have spent 3 days going over all the forums I could find but the answer is not there. Everything seems to be dated. I have an original droid that is running 2.2.2. I just rooted this morning. Can anyone point me to some directions? Thanks in advance.
